Post Remembrances
08/24/2005

With sadness and sorrow long time Post member William (Billy) V. Hogg has passed away unto the Post Everlasting.

May he long be remembered for his dedication and long service to every Veteran to whom he had contact with. His many years of dedicated service as a Representative to Hampton Veterans Hospital shall never be forgotten. Billy passed away on August 24, 2005.

Every Post member who knew Billy extends their heart felt sorrow to his family and extend's their thank's for his dedicated service to our Post.

Billy is survived by his devoted wife of 51 years, Betty L. Hogg; son, Johnny Hogg; daughter, Sharon O'Keefe (Robert); nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, all of Hampton; brother-in-law, Eddie Herb, as well as many nieces and nephews. He also leaves sons, Steven Hogg and William Hogg Jr. and his sister, Gloria Jolin.

As a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was a 29- year member of The American Legion Phoebus Post 48 where he served two terms as Commander. His Post honors include Post Legionnaire of the Year, Life Member and The American Legion Gold Medal of Merit. Billy served several terms as the 3rd District chaplain. Billy loved and served his fellow veterans as The American Legion's State Veterans Affairs Volunteer Service Representative at the VA Medical Center, Hampton for many years. Among the numerous awards bestowed on Billy throughout the years was the Department of Veterans Affairs Superior Service Award for 17,500 hours of volunteer service. Billy's volunteer service included work at the domiciliary, the spinal cord injury ward and the hospice unit. During his many hours at the PCP he ministered to the terminally ill. He held the hand of too many of our nation's veterans as they took their last breath while they were reporting to Post Everlasting and the Commander of us all. Billy gave over 23,400 hours in service to the Community, State and Nation.

A funeral service was held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 27, by the Rev. Bill Geouge of Sharon Baptist Church in the funeral home chapel of R. Hayden Smith.
