Appreciation By Sacrifice

The shiny toys of Christmas Day,
Are stuck, buried in the toy box,
As the revelry of the new year,
Still rings in our ears.

The costly graduation present,
Now sits in the driveway,
With fenders dented,
And the interior trashed.

These gifts lay dormant,
Unused and uncared for.
What was once highly prized,
Is now abandoned.

And so, many things freely given,
Are now rejected,
And often scorned,
By the ones to whom they were given.

To those who paid no price,
Each gift was taken for granted,
Milked for all its pleasure,
And discarded without a thought.

But in those who sacrificed,
And knew the value of their gift,
Was an appreciation born,
To care, honor, and remember.

The sacrifice brought understanding,
Of the gift's true worth,
And elevated an inward desire,
To protect and nurture.

To appreciate a gift,
Whether physical or spiritual,
Something of self must be given.
Look what God did!
