Finding
Ethical Puppy Breeders
An
ethical breeder will be as concerned as you are that you and your puppy will
be a perfect match.
Ethical breeders ask questions.
They will, in a way, interview you for the position of owner. Don't ever be
offended if a breeder asks questions about such things as your favorite
activities or how much time you will be able to spend with your dog.
Instead, be glad that the breeder is taking that extra step to ensure that
his or her particular pup will meet your expectations. Remember, not every
dog breed is compatible with every dog owner.
How do you know if a breeder is ethical? Here are some tips to look
for.
-
A
breeder should know all about their puppy's sire and dam. Ask to see the
dam (and sire, if possible). Ask questions about their temperament,
conformation and health.
-
Puppy
mills sometimes breed puppies and then give them to brokers to sell in a
home environment, giving the impression they are home-bred. Beware.
-
A
good breeder will have the welfare of their particular breed in mind. He
or she will breed a litter to obtain the best quality pups possible, not
to make money.
-
How
many dogs does the breeder have? Can they provide personal attention to
each dog? Are the dogs well cared for? Is their area clean? Are they in
good health?
-
A
good breeder will NEVER push you to buy a puppy. They will want to make
sure that you and the puppy are a perfect match.
-
Ethical
breeders will check the health of a sire and dam before breeding.
Research what health problems affect the breed you are interested in and
ask the breeder for the results of the sire's and dam's health tests.
Now
that you know how to find the perfect dog for you, don't
forget the very important
third step--training!
