Training
Your Puppy To Be a Good Neighbor
Once you've found the perfect
puppy, the next most important thing you can do is to socialize and train
him. It is never too early to start. Socializing and training are the keys
to teaching your dog what is acceptable and what is unacceptable. It often
makes the difference between an easy-to-live-with companion and an
out-of-control beast. Dogs who have owners that take the time to train
them while they are young are likely to stay with the same owner for life.
Your new dog deserves to be yours for his lifetime, so please don't skip
this important step in responsible dog ownership!
After your puppy has had at least three sets of shots, it's time to take
him out into the world around him. Puppies that aren't socialized and
allowed to experience new people, places and sounds, are at greater risk
of growing up to be shy dogs who are unfriendly towards strangers.
Unsocialized dogs often bark more and are more likely to bite than
socialized dogs. One of the best places to take your puppy to meet other
dogs and people is to a puppy socialization class. These classes are
usually offered by local kennel clubs or pet food stores. The classes
should be structured and run by an experienced dog trainer who can help
you to introduce your puppy slowly and gently to new surroundings. You
want this to be a happy and fun experience for your pup!
A puppy training class will allow your pup to become comfortable in
various surroundings. The next step is an obedience class, which is also
often offered by local kennel clubs and large pet food retailers.
