Reign of Terror/End of Terror
Known to history as the Reign of Terror, this period represented the efforts of a few men to have influence in the government of the country of France and engage war in a time of crisis. Georges Danton and Maximilien Robespierre were dominating the new government. Price and wage maximums were unevenly dispersed, and the acceptance of the worthless paper currency, the assignats, was made mandatory. The extremist Jacques Hébert, who had brought the idea of the worship of a goddess of Reason, was arrested and executed in March 1794, along with other so-called ultrarevolutionaries. Who were very serious when it came to the revolutionary thoughts. The following month Danton and his followers, the “Indulgents,” who supported relaxation of emergency measures, were executed. All of these things put fuel on the fire for the people of France who wanted serious changes for the government. This left the door wide open for the coup de 'etat from Napoleon Bonaparte.
