Jupiter is the 5th planet from the sun and is classified as a gas giant planet as it is composed mainly of hydrogen and helium.   Other gasses include ammonia and other compounds.  Ammonia is thought to give some of the cloud bands their color.  Jupiter contains an enormous magnetic field which if it were visible would be as big as a full moon from our perspective.  It orbits the sun at over 5 AU.  One AU is approximately 93 million miles, or the distance between the sun and the earth.  These photos where of course taken by me.

Jupiter on April 7, 2005

This Photo of Jupiter was taken in April of 2005.  The finished product you see her is actually 4 separate exposures processed with Registax to bring out detail and remove color fringing.

Jupiter and it's moons on April 7, 2005

This view of Jupiter shows the cloud bands, the great read spot and the four Galilean moons, Io, Ganymede, Europe and Callisto, (Listed top to bottom.)

Jupiter rotates on it's axis once aver .41 earth days. It takes  4331.42 earth days for it to make one complete orbit around the sun. In the photos above you can see it's four largest moons, Ganymede, Callisto, Europe and Io.
