Comets are bits of dusty ice which orbit our sun.  Many comets are quite large, the size of large city's and larger.  Comet Macholtz made it's way through the inner solar system in 2004 and 2005.   This comet did not become bright enough to see a well defined tail in smaller telescopes, but you can see the coma or haze that surrounds the nucleolus in these photos. These were taken by Quantum Singularity  in January.   The first photo here, you can see the comet as a fuzzy blue blob just below the Pleiades

 

 

 

In the photo below you can clearly see the comet's coma as photographed through my 5" Telescope.
