Rainbow Riders is as much a social group as it is a sporting group. Our cyclists come from many different backgrounds. Some have been riding for years, some have decided to become more active and re-experience cycling, and some have been thinking of riding and finally decided to "hop on and GO". We are recreational cyclists, mountain bikers, bike commuters. The group is very diverse, being comprised of men and women of all ages, riding speeds and bicycle types.
The Rainbow Riders Cycling Club began in early 2001 when a small group of recreational bicyclists recognized the excellent opportunities for cycling adventure within our area. The Hampton Roads area (also referred to as the Tidewater area) is in the South-East area of Virginia, and includes the South-side communities of Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Suffolk, along with the Peninsula communities of Newport News, Hampton, Williamsburg, and Poquoson. Most of these cities are adjacent to several other outlying counties. Such a tremendous area provides numerous opportunities for cyclists. Terrain is predominantly flat, and the roads are generally wide enough for cyclists to be able to share the road with traffic.
Excellent riding opportunities are also available in the rural areas of Virginia Beach, Suffolk, Isle of Wight county, Yorktown and Williamsburg. Many off-road trails are available for off-road cycling opportunities, too. We are also within 3 to 4 hours of the Blue Ridge and Appalachian mountains, where you can enjoy some of the BEST mountain biking rides in the mid-Atlantic region!
Our rides are typically 15-25 miles long, and we guarantee that no one will be left behind on the route. We ride slow enough that you can carry on a conversation with someone else if you want to, yet fast enough that you won't fall off your bike. Every ride usually has at least one newcomer, and extra effort is put into making those riders feel at ease on the ride.
We want you to come back and keep riding with us!
