Stars & Stripes Forever |
|
Over one hundred years ago, John Philip Sousa introduced "The Stars and Stripes Forever" at a concert in Philadelphia. A century later Americans still thrill to Sousa's march. A music critic for the New York Times said in 1978, "There are those who will say that The Stars and Stripes Forever is the greatest piece ever written by an American composer". An old friend of my father's, "Pat" Patton played in Sousa's band as a young man. Although retired, he often conducted the "city" band in open air concerts in the park during the summer when I was in high school. What fun! What memories!!! |
