Robinson Swim & Dive Shines at 2004 Winter Sports Banquet

How do you top that? Principal Dan Meier introduced Coach Tracey Blaine and swim/dive by saying that if you get lucky your team might win a State Championship once in its history, but you have to be very lucky and very talented to win two in a row. Tracey covered highlights from the season that clearly detailed the depth and strength of the team: 8 Gold Medals, 4 States Records, and numerous All American swims! The celebration continued in the Recital Hall with recognition for district, region, and state teams, and 37 team members being presented with the prestigious scholar-athlete award—by far the largest number of any team!

Tracey's prognosis for 2005? The potential to do it again, but this time with both girls and boys taking top honors in the state. Work hard off season and get ready for another exciting year in 2005!

8 Gold Medals + 4 State Records!
Rams Boys Team Wins Second Straight State Title with 274 Points,
Girls Team Takes 7th

With perhaps the largest number of points scored ever in the boys' VHSL AAA State Championships, the Rams took the State title for the second year in a row with 274 points. The Lady Rams also had a very good night, taking 7th.

A 3-foot version of the banner has been hung in the window of 12th grade pricincpal's office opposite the front doors. The full 8-foot version has been hung in the cafeteria. Whiile we couldn't get them back in time to be displayed for school on Monday, they are in position now and will be visible when students come to school on Tuesday!

Rams Swim & Dive Tops Banner Year with Record-Setting Year in 2004!!!

How do you top that? This was the question on the minds of Rams Swim & Dive team members and coaches as they contemplated the impressive wins from the 2003 season—including the team’s first Boys’ State Championship and its first All Americans. The answer became clear at the conclusion of the State meet this year as the combined girls and boys team walked away with 8 gold medals, 4 state records, and 7 automatic All Americans—plus 4 All-American consideration swims. In addition the boys team took its second straight State title, dominating the meet with 274 points—82 points ahead of its nearest competitor. Even short a member, the girls’ team took 7th—an amazing feat for participating in only four events!

Boys’ Team

Inspired by their 2003 State Championship rings, the boys’ team spent the season rewriting the record board. Eight of the 11 team records for the swim events were broken—a couple of them multiple times—as Rams continued to step up their swims meet after meet. Steve Scheren pushed both his 50 Free and 100 Free records from 2003 to impressive new lows. At States Steve took two individual golds in the 50 and 100 Free—both Automatic All American times. In addition, his 100 Free set a new State record by more than 1/2 second. Drew Finelli joined in the record setting fray making his mark with team records in the 200 Free and 500 Free—both up for All American consideration. At States, Drew took the gold in the 200 Free and silver in the 500 Free—nearly edging out the competition to take two golds. Not to be left out, Daniel Davison stepped up and broke the 100 Back record.

In addition to points taken in individual events by Will Trainor, Pat Laiti, and RJ Hess (all of whom met or beat their seeds), hardworking relay teams pushed themselves to new lows as all three relay records were rewritten. The 200 Medley Relay (Davison, Laiti, Hess, Scheren) took the gold at States, setting the State record, and becoming Automatic All Americans. The 200 Free relay (Trainor, Laiti, Holmes, Scheren) and the 400 Free relay (Davison, Trainor, Finelli, Hess) are also State champions—taking not only the gold but also All American consideration.  Mike Papageorge, also had an outstanding year, taking 3rd in States and contributing 16 points to the team victory! Members of the boys’ team for States in 2004 are Steve Scheren, Drew Finelli, Daniel Davison, RJ Hess, Pat Laiti, Will Trainor, Stephen Vu, Mike Papageorge, and Zach Holmes. The boys also took the championship at Districts and Regions, and set several District records.

Boys' Results

  • All three boys' relays took gold — bringing in 120 points among them.
  • All swimmers in individual events either maintained or improved their seeds -- adding 9 points over what they were expected to take!
  • The Boys 200 Medley Relay (Davison, Laiti, Hess, Scheren) struck gold, re-braking the State record they set the night before and achieved Automatic All American (AAA) status at 1:37.34 and breaking the team record they set at Regions -- coming in about 1 1/2 seconds ahead of the second-place Lake Braddock team.

L to R:
Steve Scheren, Pat Laiti, RJ Hess, Daniel Davison

  • The boys stuck gold again in the 200 Free event as Drew Finelli dropped .50 to retain his first place seed — swimming 1:44.55.
  • Both Daniel Davison and RJ Hess moved up from their seeds in the 200 IM -- finishing 6th and 11th.
  • Steve Scheren swim a 21.14 in the 50 free taking gold and AAA. Pat Laiti moved up from 10th seed to 9th place swimming 22.39 — a career best.
  • RJ Hess move up two spots in the the 100 Fly to finish 14th
  • In the 100 Free, Robinson had two medalists. Steve Scheren swam 46.09 to take the gold, State Record, AAA, and a new team record. Will Trainor dropped his time from 49.05 to 48.62 to take 6th!
  • Drew Finelli swam the race of his life in the 500 free — for a considerable time it looked like he was going to take top seed Alex Anderson — dropping more than 2 seconds from his seed time to finish in 4:38.24.
  • The 200 Free relay (Trainor, Laiti, Holmes, Scheren) dropped 1.17 seconds to retain their top seed and take gold and set a team record. This swim was just .11 short of AAA — and 1.24 faster that last year's relay team who achieved All American status from their consideration time. While all team members had great swims, Zach Holmes dropped over a second from his previous best split to swim as 22.3. Great contribution, Zach!

L to R:
Pat Laiti, Steve Scheren,
Will Trainor, Zach Holmes

  • Daniel Davison had perhaps his best swim of the night in the 100 Back -- dropping .29 to achieve 53.96 and break the team record he had just set. He held his 4th place seed.
  • Pat Laiti looked like he was going to take his heat in the 100 breast standing out in the first 75 yards. Pat finished holding his seed. His explosive start and quick turns were standouts in this event.
  • The 400 Free Relay (Davison, Finelli, Trainor, Hess) easily took gold and set a new team record at 3:16.07. Way to put some distance on the competition.

L to R:
Drew Finelli, RJ Hess, Daniel Davison, Will Trainor

  • Mike Papageorge took 3rd in Diving with a score of 418.26 — adding 16 points to the team's total!
  • Also, congrats to Stephen Vu, who debuted at States this year in the 200 free, taking 17th in prelims.

    Girls’ Team

While the boys had to replace the backstroke leg on the medley relay and get teammates to step up and take the points scored by last year’s graduating seniors, the girls had larger flippers to fill. Their three top performers from the 2003 season were gone—two graduated and one moved. Fortunately, junior standout Sarah Baker just happened to move to Robinson from Washington State and freshman powerhouse Lauren Jacoby joined the team. These two new players—along with the continued development of other key teammates—made for a strong season in 2004. While the girls had only four events in finals at States—those were four strong events, earning the team 100 points and a 7th place finish! With Lauren Jacoby out of town at Senior National in Florida, Sarah Baker drove the Lady Rams success at States, winning both of her events with Automatic All American times and State records in each.

Baker also served to anchor the 400 Free Relay (Weems, Patterson, Henderson, Baker), which took a third place finish, and served as the backstroke leg of the 200 Medley relay (Baker, Mealy, Patterson, Weems), which took 5th. Unfortunately, due to a pulled muscle, breaststroker Erin Mealy was not able to repeat her career best swim from Regions during the State meet. In total the girls’ team took two State records and 4 Automatic All Americans. Members of the girls’ team for States were Sarah Baker, Erin Mealy, Claire Weems, Kelly Henderson, Mary Agnes Patterson, Allison Bourne, and Kate Rice. The girls were also the District champions and 3rd place finishers at Regions this year.

Girls Results

  • Most asked question: WHERE did Sarah Baker come from? It wasn't out of thin air! She was clearly a surprise and excellent addition to the team this year! Sarah took two golds — and two State records and contributed to both relay teams! Congrats to Sarah for an outstanding meet.
  • The 200 Medley relay (Baker, Mealy, Patterson, Weems) dropped .63 to move up from 6th to 5th!
  • Sarah Baker had an upset victory in the 200 Free dropping 2.43 seconds to take gold and a State Record! This is also a team record.
  • Sarah scored a second victory taking gold and the State Record in the 500 Free dropping 3.76 seconds. This is also a team record.
  • The 400 Free relay (Weems, Patterson, Henderson, Baker) dropped 2.9 seconds to 3:39.94 to move up two places to 3rd! A truly exciting race -- and a new team record.
  • Also congrats to Claire Weens, Kate Rice, Alisson Bourne, and Kelly Henderson, who swam in the 200 Free relay, which took 19th in prelims.

Epilogue
While the 2004 season is completed, the honors the Rams will achieve are not. Team members will be notified of the selection as members of All District, All Region, and All Met teams. Most exciting for the team this year is that four team members—Steve Scheren, Sarah Baker, Drew Finelli, and Lauren Jacoby—are likely to be selected as First Team All-Met. As far as we can tell from the All-Met archives, it would be a first for four members of the same team to be honored as All-Met First Team during the same year.

Rams Boys and Girls Take District Champs AND Eight District Records at Finals!

Districts was a great meet for both genders on the Rams team, with the boys and girls teams winning by a comfortable margin — and taking a total of 8 district records between them! Rams also achieved All-American Consideration in 9 events. Every member of 2004 District team — 23 girls and 22 boys — made it back to finals. Click here for a roster of District team members and their events.

Further, it looks like 13 boys (for a total of 22 events) and 11 girls (for a total of 20 events) will be continuing on to Regions! Click here for a roster of the Region team members and their events. Congrats to everyone for a great meet. See below for a look at District and team records set by event and by individual:

The Details — 8 District Records and 9 All-American Consideration Times:

Boys 200 Medley Relay (Davison, Laiti, Hess, Trainor) — Swam a time that took a new high school record as well as broke the old district record time. Unfortunately, this outstanding performance was eclipsed by less than .16 by the Lake Braddock team. This is an All-American Consideration time — and set up for a great rematch at Regions.

Girls 200 Medley Relay (Baker, Mealy, Patterson, Jacoby) — Set a District record by more than a second. This is an All-American Consideration time.

Boys 400 Free Relay (Davison, Finelli, Trainor, Scheren) — Broke the District record — held by last year's Rams team — by 3 seconds, also setting a new team record. This is an All-American Consideration time.

------------

Sarah Baker — Set a District record in the 500 free — and re-broke the team record she set earlier in the season. This is an All-American Consideration time.

Drew Finelli — Set a new school record in the 200 free. Drew also took the District record in the 500 free again at finals— this time beating the record he set just the night before by nearly 8 seconds. Drew's 500 free swim is an All-American Consideration time.

Lauren Jacoby — Set a new District record in the 200 free by three seconds — which also broke a 10-year old Rams record. She also took a District record in the 100 free by a second as well as eking out a new school record. Both are All-American Consideration times.

Steve Scheren — Set a District record in the 50 free and 100 free, and re-broke his Rams record in the 100 free. Both are All-American Consideration times.

Other Exciting Events, Great Performances:

The energy spewed by the cheering teams almost raised the roof during the Girls 400 Free Relay. While Lake Braddock fans were heard singing "Ole, Ole, Ole, Ole" early on, their voices fell mute as West Springfield briefly took the lead. Then the Lady Rams made their move in the final lap of the event to take District Gold. What a way to finish the evening!
Pat Laiti came out blazing in his 50 free event. Having had an off race in prelims, he turned it all on in the Console Finals to get his Region cut and move on to the next round of competition. Congrats Pat, you not only secured your spot in Regions, you were only hundredths off the State cut! We knew you could do it! He also made regions in the breast.
Congrats to Tyler Marriott, who came back from swimming with Strep Friday to solid performances in finals in the 200 IM and 100 Breast.
"Point Conversions": Congrats to Zach Holmes in 50 free for moving up from 7th to stake out his spot in Regions — and to Allison Bourne for moving into 6th (and Regions) from her 8th place seed.
Congrats to all the Rams who had best times in so many events! We will recognize all of you on this web site just as soon we are able to get a print out of results to study more carefully.

First Timers, Newcomers:

Several seasoned Rams swimmers will be making their debuts at Regions this year: Tyler Marriott, Matt Bell, Sarah Binder, and Stephanie Hobart. Three newcomers to the team Sarah Baker, Lauren Jacoby (FR), and Zach Holmes (FR) are also welcome additions to the Regions team.

Swimmers of the Meet:

In addition to the great swims listed above there were a number of swimmers/swims worthy of mention for great time drops alone. Among these are:

Will Trainor — who stepped up in all his events for great performances
Kelly Henderson — dropped lots of time in her 200 Free race
Lizzy Morgan — had great drops in both events
Daniel Davison — best times in both events -- just short of two very competitive school records
Virginia Ward — swam her heart out in 100 Back to drop a full second

Great swimming Rams! Rest up and stay healthy for Regions next week!

This recap was written using the Finals results posted at Districts. While care was taken in constructing it, please let the web master kn
ow of any missing or incorrect information.

District Records Set in Prelims District Records were set in prelims Friday night by Lauren Jacoby (FR) and Drew Finelli (SO)! Congrats to both for their accomplishments! The strength of our underclassmen bode well for future Ram swimming success.

Rams Plan All-American Plaque

Great swims deserve some perpetual recognition. As a results, the team received funding from the RAMS Athletic Boosters to create a perpetual All-American plaque to honor those who achieve this highest recognition in high school swimming. Look for the plaque in the hall for the 2004-05 school year.

Records Broken for 2004 — The Rams virtually rewrote the record board this year. There are now too many records broken and re-broken to continue to write up in this section of the Web site. What a year! Congrats to Daniel Davison for taking his first individual record at Regions this week! Please visit the links below to see the many records set by the team in 2004. Check back after states to see the final tally of records broken for the season!
