Hitchcock Gully, Mount Willard -- 1 February, 2002

This was the first ice climbing trip for the Narragansett chapter of the AMC.  Three of us headed up Hitchcock Gully for the day.  We stayed on the "classic" line which had less ice than the adjacent east face slabs on the right.  We were one of about three party's on the route that day, but the other's split off onto the slabs at the top.  This year there was one stretch of mixed climbing at the end of the lower east face.  Be prepared for a long walk-off if you head to the summit and follow the hiking path down as it winds down the back side of Mount Willard and comes out closer to the new AMC welcome center than to the parking lot at the top of the notch.
