Annino's Watercolor Gallery

Hi! The reason I don't update this site more often is that I don't want to take the time from my painting and from my other activities (such as learning to fiddle, singing bass in a barbershop chorus, skiing, tennis, etc., etc.). In any case I decided to stop for a while and show you some of my new stuff. Since it's winter I thought the old Western New York winter scene would be appropriate for the home page. This is a scene off Cole Road in Colden, NY south of Buffalo. I have driven this road and the paralell Lower East Hill Road many times during fierce winter storms on my way home from Buffalo. Rest easy, however, because that's the only winter scene you will see this time. This show is devoted to marine subjects.

If you would like some music for company as you stroll through the Gallery, please click on the appropriate tab below.
I have posted a total of over 100 paintings for your enjoyment since I first opened this site. If you wish to see them click on the LINKS tab at the bottom of this page and scroll to the bottom of the LINKS page and click on the links to my previous shows. Finally, if you like my work, please click on the SIGN MY DREAMBOOK link at the bottom of this page and place your comments or just leave your e-mail address if you wish me to notify you when a new show is hung.

Parade of Tall Ships Parade of Tall Ships

This past summer (of 2004) the Tall Ships again visited Newport, RI. The U.S. Coast Gaurd barque "Eagle" led the parade. I don't remember the order. I've chosen to have the "Pride of Baltimore" second in line. This topsail schooner is built to the lines of an 1812 Baltimore Clipper. She is followed by the barque "Picton Castle" out of Lunenburg, Nova Scotia (a port famous for the fishing schooner "Bluenose")

The Picton Castle Pitcon Castle

Here's another view of the Pitcon Castle inbound for Newport. She is a traditionaly operated sail training ship dedicated to making square-rig sailing voyages around the world. As a trining ship all on board work, stand watch and learn the way of a tall ship. Workshops are conducted in rigging, sail making, boat handling, navigation, and practical seamanship.

Seals Seals Enjoying the Show

The seals enjoyed the Tall ship show too (except for the one that is sleeping) I know you usually think of seals off the California coast but, they visit us here in Narragansett Bay also.

Heading Out Shrimpers, Heading Out

When I was younger and working the Great South Bay of Long Island, New York for clams I would hear of some commercial fishing men packing up their entire families and leaving for the South and the lucrative shrimping trade.

Outbound Shrimper Outbound on a Foggy Morning

That was the time when shrimp were running about $6 a pound (about 20 shrimp with their heads cut off to a pound) and buyers were running from boat to boat with $ 50,000 cash money. Those days have long gone and shrimpers now face declinning stocks, tightning government regulations, and increasing foreign competition.

Shrimper in the Fog Shrimping in the Fog

Conditions can vary out there on the ocean from thick fog to

At Sea At Sea in a Bit of a Blow

Pretty hairy. This skipper is running with his outriggers as far down as he can without catching a wave for the increased stability that this mode of sail offers.

Shrimper at the Dock At Rest

An excellent article on the current state of shrimping was recently written by Robb White and published in the May/June 2004 edition of Wooden Boat magazine. I used many of the shrimp boat photos in that article as reference material for this show.
