"Ed" is a 1962 Corvair 700 4 door sedan, with PG and a later 110 hp engine. Driving Ed is like
stepping into a time machine. Setting behind the wheel on the cloth covered bench seat, you buckle the
seat belt and crank up the ignition, the muted sound of the air cooled six is purring behind you.
Soon, after a bit of humming, the tubes in the AM radio warm up and static spiced music fills the car.
Crusing down a two lane highway on a warm summer night, you can almost hear Harry Carey announcing the ball game
over the radio. Entering a tunnel the radio fades only to return as you reach the open road.
The rear 3/4 view shows off the distinctive lip shading the back glass. This design element first appeared on
the 1959 Chevy, Buick, Olds, Pontiac 4 door hardtops and carried thru 1960 on the big GM cars. The Corvair
picked up the element in 1960 and kept it thru 1964. The Corvair was the only non-hardtop 4-door to have the lip.
The other GM compacts, Tempest, F-85, Special had a completely different roofline on their 4 door sedans. The rear
seat has amazing room for a compact car.
