Research:
John enlisted with the 42nd Miss. Vol. Inf., CSA, on May 14, 1862, at Grenada, Miss., assigned to Co. B. under Capt. Hugh R. Miller.
His regiment was part of Maj. Gen. Henry Heth's Division that marched on Gettysburg, July 1, 1863.
During the opening engagements of that battle John was wounded in action and taken prisoner. He was received as a POW at Fort McHenry, MD, on July 4 and transferred to Fort Delaware prison July 6. He was released in a prisoner exchange July 30 and apparently spent much of Aug., 1863, in hospitals in Richmond, VA. Exactly when he returned to his unit is not clear.
He was again taken prisoner at Hatchers Run, April 4, 1865. This time he was incarcerated at Point Lookout, MD. He signed a loyalty oath and was released June 20, 1865.
