Mitchell Marion Burford

Born about 1839 in DeSoto County, Mississippi.

The son of Alexander Mitchell Burford and Jane Lewter. 

He was married to Cornelia Walker about 1859 in DeSoto County, Mississippi.

He had one child Mitchell Alexander Burford born 10 June 1861

He was a farmer in the little community of Flewelling Road, later known as Flewelling Cross Road then Buck Snort, and today as Independence Mississippi in what is now Tate County.

He joined Company D 42nd Mississippi Inf. on May14, 1862 in Grenada Mississippi at the age of 22 for 3 years or the end of the war.  His commander was Colonel  Hugh R. Miller.  His Division Officer was Capt. Locke.

The 42nd was among the first units involved in the firsts days fighting at Gettysburg having many members captured in the Rail Road cut along the Emmetsburg road.  

He was wounded and captured on 3 July 1863 during the now famous Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg.  The 42nd was placed to the right of Pickett and suffered some to the highest looses of the day

He was taken to Fort Delaware where he died from Small Pox 9 November 1863 and is buried at Finn Point, NJ in a mass grave.  His name appears on the monument there.
