My Coverlet & Bed Curtain Project
Rosemarie Dion 9/99

When I bought my AVL 60 inch, 16 shaft Production Compu-Dobby I knew that this was the project I would work toward.  It took almost two years of preparation, learning about the loom, creating many different weavings and finally doing samples to find the right pattern and structure for my coverlets.

I knew I wanted to have an overshot pattern but I did not want the structure of  traditional overshot, and I wanted to weave with one shuttle. WeavePoint 5.1 has a translate feature that allows the weaver to input a pattern, in this case the Lisbon Star with Tree Borders from Keep Me Warm One Night and transform it into a different structure.  I selected a 16 shaft twill.

The Coverlets were woven by threading the loom with the Lisbon Star pattern. I began with the bottom tree border changed the tie-up to the Lisbon Star and wove two full lengths for the two twin beds, including the bottom tree border for the second coverlet.  I then rethreaded the loom for the borders.  In order for the trees to attach to the edges of the center pieces as neatly as possible, I wove them with their tops facing the selvedge and allowed for three inch hems. I also kept one Lisbon Star motif in the center as my weaving guide. You can see this threading in the pillow sham.  I had the measurements of the previous motifs on a paper tape. As long as I kept my center star within those guidelines, the trees took care of themselves.  It worked out nicely, I did have to ease some of the motifs to fit but washing and ironing seemed to smooth out the trouble areas.  (Warp 10/2 unmercerized natural. cotton, Weft 20/2 Tan Donegal wool. Set at 20 epi/ppi.)

The Woven lace Bed Curtains were simplicity itself as compared to the coverlets.  I searched the literature on handwoven lace, and downloaded  patterns found in the Lace Exchange: http://www.angelfire.com/ca/weavings/lindex.html.  Lili Goczal, Web Mistress. I then created a sampler of as many different 8 shaft designs as I could find or create using one  threading.  From these I chose Lili’s “Lili Huck Lace”. With a slight variation I wove the drapes. The lace is lined in light apple green cotton.
(Lace: 10/2 bleached unmercerized cotton, sett 20 epi/ppi.)
