Double Width Double Weave
Twin size Bed Blankets
June, 2001
The bed blanket project is completed and both blankets are in use on my twin beds.
The warp is a medium brown (sandstone from WEBS) 4/10 worsted wool with a sett of 10 for each layer (20 double sley). The width in the reed was 42 inches (double width it becomes 84 inches wide). The length of each blanket on the loom was 96 inches. The weft is a rich dark blue teal (WEBS) also 4/10 worsted. The structure is an 8 shaft twill woven with a 16 shaft AVL compu-dobby production loom. The finished blankets were cold water machine washed and spun dry, hung outside on the line and pressed while still slightly damp with an ironing press. The finished dimensions are 84" x 72". There is a lovely hand to the woolen pieces, rather velvety to the touch.

On the loom, notice the helper threads on the left of the loom at the
fold and the pins holding the two layers together at the selvages, on the
right. There is also a smooth stick placed between the layers at the selvage
opening to help catch any weaving errors. A large mirror is also positioned
to the right of the loom so that I can see between the layers as I weave
and under the weaving for stray threads.
