The Liturgical Color For Ordinary Time is Green

The color green symbolizes life and hope. Far from being “ordinary” the Sunday readings from Pentecost to Advent are filled with readings about Jesus’ public ministry. This summer many of the readings during Ordinary Time are from the Gospel of Matthew, which is known as the “teaching gospel”.

After Mass on the way home in the car, I challenge you to talk about the Gospel reading allowing each member of the family to share what they learned from the Gospel message or from the priest during the homily.

Jesus has much to teach us, but He has even more to show us through His active public ministry. How can we follow Jesus this summer, can we care for the sick; give to the poor; spend mealtimes with family and friends and evangelize through our own lives?

Family Summer Activity

GO GREEN THIS SUMMER!

Rooted in Scripture and Tradition:

We have a responsibility to respect and care for God’s creation. This responsibility is reflected throughout the Sacred Scriptures when especially in the first chapter of Genesis, when God declares that all creation is “very good” (v31). We have a moral responsibility to be committed to taking care of Mother Earth. By “Going Green” (being responsible for our use of God’s resources) we are taking an active role in protecting her for the generations to come.

“Going Green” can be integrated into our daily lives in many ways and as families we can:

Turn off the lights - Turn off electronics in your home and spend some time talking to each other!

Change the light bulbs in your home to energy efficient light bulbs

Use reusable cloths for cleaning

Drink less bottled water.

Encourage the whole family to bike, walk, bus or carpool when able.

Use your imagination - you will find many more ways to “Go Green” this summer.

Together we can make a difference!
