Lesson 4
Dispensation of Promise

The Dispensation of Promise consists of the
promises made to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

Almost the entire human race
turns away from God to idolatry.

Men began to worship the sun, the moon, the stars, and everything else they could think of except the one true God. Man had become just as bad as the people that were destroyed by the flood but God has promised not to ever destroy everyone in a flood again.

The dispersion of the world's population is the last time God deals with the entire human race as a whole.

With the call of Abram, God's attention
is focused upon a chosen people.

God now selects a man out of which to make a special and holy nation. This nation was to preserve God's truth and be a channel through which the whole world would ultimately be blessed.

God's chosen people were to be the channel
through which Messiah was to come.

  • Genesis 3:15 The seed of the woman (the human race).
  • Genesis 22:18 The seed of Abraham (the nation of Israel).
  • Genesis 49:10 The seed of Judah (the tribe of Judah).
  • II Samuel 7:12 The seed of David (the family of David).
  • Isaiah 7:14 Prophesied that He should come through a virgin.
  • Luke 1:26-33 The name of the virgin was Mary.

  • Genesis 12:1 God told him to get out of his country, get away from his family and his father's house and go to a land that God would show him.
  • Genesis 12:2 God said He would make Abram a great nation, bless him, and make his name great.
  • Genesis 12:3 God said,"I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.

Abram and Lot separate

  • Genesis 13:5-7 Strife developed between the herdmen of Abram's cattle and the herdmen of Lot's cattle. The problem was that both Abram and Lot were very rich, with flocks herds, and tents, and the land was just not able to bear them.
  • Genesis 13:8-9 Abram did not want strife between Lot and himself so he suggested a separation of ways. Abram gave Lot a choice saying,"If thou wilt take the left hand, then I will go to the right hand; and if thou depart to the right hand, then I will go to the left.
  • Genesis 13:10-13 Lot chose all the plain of Jordan and journeyed east. Abram dwelled in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelled in the cities of the plain, and pitched his tent toward Sodom.

Ishmael

  • Gen 16:1-15 The birth of Ishmael.
Sarai Abram's wife was barren and could not give Abram a son.
She gave Abram her handmaid named Hagar so that he could have a son.
The name of this son was Ishmael.

The Covenant
