Lesson 7
The Law and the Prophets Part 3

General view of the New Testament

Division of New Testament Books.

  1. The first four books of the New Testament are known as the gospels. In the gospels is recorded the history of the events which took place in the life of Jesus. The gospels are listed as part of the New Testament, but the period which they cover is still under the law of Moses.
Luke 16:16 The law and the prophets were until John.

  2. The book of Acts tells us how to become Christians. The book of Acts contains the history of the early church.

  3. The epistles instruct us on how to live the Christian life. These books were written to people who had already become Christians There was no need to give them instructions on how to be saved because they already were born again of the water and the Spirit.
    John 3:5

  4. Revelation is the only book of prophesy in the New Testament.

Theme of New Testament
(We have found him)

  1. Philip said,"We have found him,of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write".

  2. The prophets of old inquired and searched diligently to find the salvation that we enjoy today. Even the angels desire to look into it.
    I Peter 1:10-12

Four hundred silent years

The Jews

  1. During the 400 years of silence there were no prophets heard and no inspired literature written.

  2. Many changes occurred in Jewish habits, customs, and religious views during this time.

  3. Their sufferings under foreign domination greatly intensified their hope for the promised Messiah.

  4. God's purpose for the Jews of being a model nation and an example to the heathen nations was altered to use them to prepare the way for his son, Jesus Christ.

World power shifted

  1. When Judah was taken captive, the world was ruled by the Babylonians.

  2. During the seventy year of captivity the Medes and Persians began to rule. They ruled until 331 B.C.

  3. Greece then became world ruler.

  4. For around one hundred years after the fall of Greece the Jews had an independent state under the reign of the Maccabees which were a priestly family of rulers.

  5. Around 63 B.C. the Romans came into power and Julius Caesar became the emperor of Rome. After his death, Herod the Great was made king of the Jews. To win the favor of the Jews he built many great public buildings including a new temple for the Jews. This is the same Herod that was in power when Jesus was born.

Jesus again answered him with scripture, saying, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. (Matthew 4:5-7)
