Lesson 8
The Law and the Prophets Part 4

The Road to Calvary
to The Ascension

The road to Calvary.

  1. The triumphal entry (Matthew 21:1-17, Mark 11:1-11, Luke 19:29-40)
This fulfills the peophecy in Zechariah 9:9.

By His entry into Jerusalem on a donkey, Jesus publicly testifies that He is Israel's predicted King and Messiah.

    1. This entry into Jerusalem was predicted by the prophet Zechariah.

    2. Jesus' humble entry is a deliberate symbolic action to show that His kingdom is not of this world and that He did not come to rule the world with force or violence. His refusal to take action as a military conqueror proves that His kingdom is spiritual.

  2. The Plot to kill Jesus(Matthew 26:1-5, Mark 14:1-2) The Chief priests, the scribes, and elders of the people plot to kill Jesus.

The chief priests, the scribes, and the elders of the people felt threatened by the actions of Jesus, so they assembled together in one place to see how they could take Jesus with subtlety and kill him. But they were afraid to do it on the feast day of the Passover because it might cause an uproar among the people.

  3. Anointing of Jesus at Bethany. (Matthew 26:6-13, Mark 14:3-9)

The Lord has ordained that this story of Mary anointing Him should always accompany the preaching of the gospel. This is because she exemplifies better than anyone else the dedication that all followers of Christ should have. Her act was the expression of her deep devotion and profound love for the Master. The Christian faith is more than working for Jesus. It is first of all a personal ministering unto Him.

  4. Judas agrees to betray Jesus. (Matthew 26:14-16, Mark 14:10-11)

  5. The last supper. (Matthew 26:17-29, Mark 14:12-26, Luke 22:7-23)

    1. The last supper or the Lord's supper occurred during the feast of Passover. The Passover was a spring festival associates with the historical episode of Israel's departure from Egypt. It celebrated the "passing over" of the Hebrews houses by the death angel because of the blood of the lamb which was put upon the doorposts and frames of the houses. (Exodus 12:1-30)

    2. Just as the blood of the lamb saved Israel, so the blood of Jesus will save us if it is applied to the doorposts and frames of our hearts.

  6. Jesus predicts Peter's denial. (Matthew 26:30-35, Mark 14:26-31)

  7. Jesus' agony in Gethsemane. (Matthew 26:36-46, Mark 14:32-42)

    1. The physical and spiritual sufferings of Christ begins in Gethsemane.

    2. Luke 22:44 And being in agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.

    3. Matthew 26:39 And he went a little farther, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.

  8. Jesus' betrayal and arrest. (Matthew 26:47-56, Mark 14:43-52)
Christ is arrested and his disciple abandon him.

  9. Jesus before Caiaphas. (Matthew 26:57-68, Mark 14:53-65)
Jesus is brought before Caiaphas and the Jewish Council. He is blindfolded, mocked repeatedly, spat upon, and struck in the face.

  10. Peter's denial of Jesus. (Matthew 26:69-75, Mark 14:66-72)

  11. The death of Judas Iscariot. (Matthew 27:1-10)

  12. Jesus before Pontius Pilate. (Matthew 27:11-23, Mark 15:1-14)

In the morning, Jesus, battered and exhausted, is taken accross Jerusalem to be interrogated by Pilate. Pilate's greatest sin was compromising what he knew to be true and right for the sake of position, status, and personal gain. Pilate knew Christ was innocent, and declared this so on several occasions. (Matthew 27:18; John 19:4-6)

  13. Jesus delivered for crucifixion. (Matthew 27:24-26, Mark 15:15)

  14. The soldiers mock Jesus. (Matthew 27:27-31, Mark 15:16-20)

Jesus' death, burial, and resurrection.

  1. The death of Jesus. (Matthew 27:45-56, Mark 15:33-41)
