What is God's name?
Matthew 28:19 instructs us to be baptized in the
"Name of the Father, and of the Son,
and of the Holy Ghost."
In this study I will attempt to resolve these three questions.
- What is the Name of the Father?
- What is the Name of the Son?
- What is the name of the Holy Ghost ?
The Name "Jehovah" (taken from the Hebrew YHWH or Yahweh) was revealed
to Moses as the Name of God Almighty and was to be GOD"s Name forever.
Compare Exodus 3:14 with Exodus 6:2-3
"Jesus" is the Graecized form of the Hebrew name "Joshua" and means
"JEHOVAH HAS BECOME OUR SALVATION." (Compare this with Isaiah 43:10-11 and
Luke 2:11.)
Jesus received His Name by inheritance (Hebrews 1:4), proving that His
and His Father's Name were the same. This is obvious since a son always inherits his
father's name. Read Hebrews 1:1-4.
Isaiah 9:6 tells us the Son's Name would be called, "..The mighty GOD,
the everlasting Father."
Philippians 2:9 states that Jesus was given a Name which was above
every name. What name could Christ have borne that was above every name unless it was
GOD's own Name ? Read Philippians 2:5-11
Jesus said of himself, I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive
me not: If another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive" Read John 5:43
Peter tells us in Acts 4:12, "Neither is there salvation in any other:
for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved."
If the Father's name is different from that of the Son's, as the Trinitarians teach us,
is there any salvation connected with the Father's name ?
In Revelation 22:3-4 it is written that there is only one throne and
the Lamb will be in it. Also his servants will serve him, it is his face they will see
and his name will be in their foreheads. Compare this with Revelation 14:1 and
Zechariah 14:9. You will see that the name of the Lamb and the name of the Father have
to be the same name.
The apostles and early Christians clearly understood that the Name of
the Father and the Son was the same. Therefore, without exception they all baptized in
the Name of Jesus.
Since the Church is the Bride Of Christ, she surely would take her
husband's name. In taking her husband's name, she automatically takes her husband's
father's name.
The only way we can take the Father's Name today is by being baptized
in the Name of Jesus Christ according to Acts 2:38, 8:12-17, 10:48, and 19:1-6.
