APPENDIX A

The Deatherage family was grafted onto the Death family of Dartford, county Kent, England. I am including a brief history of that family so that one can see our Deatherage family is not related to this family. Or if it is there must be more proof.

GENERATION I

1. WILLIAM DEATH of Dartford, county Kent was termed a gentleman and it is probable that the original grant of Death arms was issued to him. "Sable, a griffin passant or between three crescents argent," "under the hand and seal of Clarenceux Cooke the xiiith day of February ano 1589." He married Anna the daughter and heiress of a Vaughn of Eritjh* in the reign of Edward VI. William probably died in the year 1591.

3 ii. William
  iii. Mary   m. Thomas Hawes
  iv. Frances
  v. Magdalena   m. - Hendley
  vi. Elizabeth   m. Richard Rawlyns
  vii. Alice   m. William Heath
4 viii. John

* Please note all italized words before my sources listed on page 94 are in Latin.

GENERATION II

2. THOMAS DEATH was the son of William and Anna (Vaughn) Death. He married Joane Hed. She was the daughter of William or John Hed "footeman to Queene Mary and Queene Elizabeth." Thomas probably died in 1617.

issue:

5 i. Thomas
  ii. William
  iii. Alice
  iv. Margaret   m. Galfridi Snidnell/Sindell
  v. Joane   m. Robert Offin
  vi. John c1601-

3. WILLIAM DEATH was the son of William and Anna (Vaughn) Death. He married Elizabeth Thatcher. William was a grocer living in London. Elizabeth was the daughter of the merchant of the Staple. William was living in 1633.

issue:

i. Richard   m. Janam Mason
ii. Andreas
iii. Elizabeth
iv. Mary   m. Abraham Smith

4. JOHN DEATH was the son of William and Anna (Vaughn) Death.

issue:

i. Thomas c1604-

GENERATION III

5. THOMAS DEATH was the son of Thomas and Joane (Hed) Death. He married on 10 Jun 1624 Mary Barton. She was the daughter of Adrian "of St. Dunstan-in-the-West apothecary." Thomas was living in 1634 and was called a gentleman. He was therefore an armiger (he had a coat of arms).

issue:

i. Adrian c1625- (oldest son and heir apparent in 1634)
ii. Thomas
iii. Katherin

The graft appears at this point. #5 Thomas Death supposedly married "Mary Patton" and they had a son James "Deatherage" born 1600 died 1642. James is the supposed father of William Deatherage the immigrant found on page 3. A later genealogist made James "Deatherage" the son of #2 Thomas Death but that too, is not likely. Not only is there no record of James but William the immigrant was living in 1763/4 at the time he appeared in the Culpeper County Court. If James was William's father, William was born at the latest in 1643 and would have been at least 120 years old when he appeared before the Culpeper County Court.

APPENDIX B

DEATHERAGES NOT PLACED IN THE MAIN TEXT

ACHILLES DEATHERAGE who witnessed the consent of Rachel Deatherage Feb 1801 in Stokes Co., North Carolina

ALEXANDER DEATHERAGE supposed father of #5 George. "Alexander Deatherage, grandfather of James C. Deatherage, was in the Revolutionary War, came from Normandy, France, in 1734." "Amos-Deatherage Family Bible," The Ridge Runners (1977) v. 9, pp.172-3. I do not know the date of this bible or who entered the above sentence. I know of no other reference to an Alexander which could be this man.

BRAXTON DEATHERAGE died 1801 Rowan Co., North Carolina. Rowan County Willbook "E" p.240 and Deedbook "24" p.19. He left a widow and four children.

children:

i. female c1795- m. John Hunter
ii.
iii. Charles
iv. female c1799-

GREEN BERRY DEATHERAGE was born about 1816 at North Carolina [1860 federal census]. He died after 17 Jul 1860. It is probable he is a descendant of Rachel Mabe Deatherage.

Berry married Tilitha Hampton 25 Jul 1833 at Stokes Co., North Carolina. The bondsman was Samuel Hill, Jr. Tilitha was born about 1820 at Virginia [1860 federal census]. She died after 17 Jul 1860. In the 1860 census enumeration I found "Lutha Detheridge." This could even be a second wife.

Berry was living in Wythe Co., Virginia, in 1837 [Taxlist: E-mail Pete Coker 8 Jun 2000]. He and his family were living in Grainger Co., Tennessee, in 1840. On 10 Mar 1845 he was in Campbell Co., Tennessee, where he attended the wedding of Joel A. Hampton and Nancy Bennett. By 1850 he was living in Whitley Co., Kentucky. In 1860 he was living with his family in Knox Co., Kentucky. He gave his occupation as mechanic in the latter census enumeration.

children:

i. Nancy c1837- (born at Virginia)
ii. Adaline c1843- (born at Tennessee)
iii. James c1844- (born at Tennessee)
iv. Lutha c1846- (born at Kentucky)
v. Joel c1847- (born at Kentucky)
vi. Juda c1849- (born at Kentucky)
vii. Eliza c1851-1859
viii. Frances c1855- (born at Kentucky)
ix. Ever[ment] c1858- (born at Kentucky)

JOHN DEATHERAGE was born about 1820 North Carolina [1850 federal census]. He died after 1880.

John married Sarah (Sally) Burge/Berge. Sally, daughter of D(ruby) and Mary Berge, was born about 1829 in either Virginia or North Carolina. She died after 1880.

John and his family were living in Tazewell Co., Virginia, in 1850. He had moved to Pulaski Co., Kentucky, by 1855 and is listed in the 1860, 1870, and 1880 federal census enumerations. He gave his occupation in 1850 and 1870 as wagon maker and in 1860 as farmer. My current theory is John is the son of Achilles Deatherage 3 (Achilles2, William1).

ELIZABETH MAHALA DEATHERAGE MABE the illegitimate child of Samuel Hill, Jr., and Tabitha Deatherage, was born Aug 1829 [Thelma Mabe] in North Carolina. She died in Dec 1921 [Thelma Mabe].

Mahala married Gabriel Mabe on 4 Feb 1847 [Thelma Mabe]. Gabriel was born on 19 Dec 1822 [Thelma Mabe] in North Carolina. He died in 1895 [Thelma Mabe].

Mahala was the great granddaughter of Rachel Mabe Deatherage(1765-1855), see page 7, who raised her. Mahala's mother, Tabitha, died at Mahala's birth, and her grandmother was supposedly dead.

Fines were paid for or by several Deatherages for illegitimate children. What names these children took is in some cases unknown. When the details are known I have provided them in the main text.

NOTE: Mrs. Bettie C. McCaleb, during Nov and Dec 1992, sent me photocopies of the Dudley Family Register, a photocopy of the marriage bond of William and Mary (Deatherage) Dudley, a photocopy of a picture of the tombstone of William and Mary (Deatherage) Dudley, a picture of Mary (Deatherage) Dudley, and a copy of the death certificate of Mary (Deatherage) Dudley. The information on the death certificate was supplied by Hugh D. Dudley, who stated his mother's parents were "Kiles and Mary Delerge." Even with all this help I cannot place Mary, perhaps she is a daughter of the Achilles listed at the top of page 95.
