In Jul 1823 Allen went to his father's to help plow corn. He took off his shoes, which he usually did not do, and went into the field to cut oats for the horses. He saw some blackberries by the way. He beat down the grass and weeds by the blackberries to scare away the snakes. As he went to pick the blackberries a snake bit him. He killed the snake and started home; he fainted along the way. His brother found him and carried him home. He lived another eleven days before he died.
Allen farmed and was a teacher of vocal music.
After Allen's death, Peggy rented her farm to a man for three years. After that her sons farmed the land for her. She was a prudent farmer. She never became involved in debt and always had plenty for a substantial living. She also saw to it that her children received some education, as Allen had stated he wanted his children educated.
