Bird was elected constable of Howard County in 1846. He served as constable until the Summer of 1852. He was then elected Sheriff and served until 1856. In the Fall of 1856 he was elected to the legislature from Howard County. He was elected again in 1858. Bird's farm consisted of 320 acres of well improved land. Sources
