53. SARAH DEATHERAGE EDGEMON

Braxton EDGEMAN (1812 Sullivan Co, TN Tax List).

Roots of Roane County, TN, 1792 -

John McMurray Barnard Collection

1870 Wapello Co., IA, federal census

v. John S. bef 1819- m. Annie J. -
This appears to fit since brother Allen was in Bradley Co, TN in 1840. John would be born before 1819, if paying poll tax in 1839. White Poll assessed on males 21-50. "John EGMON, 1WP" (1839 Bradley Co, TN Tax List, 4th Dist,Pg 5).

vi. George W. 1833- m. Mary A. -
Can not verify this birth. Suggest we revert to no date per [Stanfill @ Pg. 31].

__. Allen 1811- 1871 m. Mahala Webb

The descendants of Allen Edgemon relate that Allan was given land in Roane Co, TN by his family. Their belief is that Allen was the son of Braxton and Sarah Deatherage Edgemon. Allen returned the land after he ran off with a married woman. This seems to be supported by the following two land entries in Roane Co, TN.:

"W. EDGMON deeded 190 Acres in the Hiwassee District to A. EDGMON on 15 Dec 1834" (Roane Co, TN County Court) & (Roane Co, TN Warranty Deed Book Vol G-1, Pg 128).

"Allen EDGMAN deeded 190 Acres in the Hiwassee District to William EDGMON on 13 Dec 1835" (Roane Co, TN Warranty Deed Book Vol G-1, Pg 413).

"I had a first cousin, she died about a month ago, who was much more up on the family than I am. She said that Mahala Webb was married to a man and that she and Allen ran off and were married. She said that Allen's family had given him some property, but that when he ran off with Mahala he gave the property back. Can you see anywhere that the above property was returned to William?" (J.W. Henson Ltr, 13 Mar 1999).

"Yes, Allen was the son of Braxton. Allen is my great-grandfather, and is buried in the Salem Baptist Church Cemerety in Catoosa County, Georgia. Thats about 12 miles from my house here in Chattanooga. I am looking for more on my Braxton, the son of William, Jr." (J.W. Henson Ltr, 13 Mar 1999).

"Allen EDGMON, 1WP" (1836 Roane Co, TN Tax List, 8th Dist). Same Tax District as William. Born before 1816, (21 to pay Poll Tax).
"Allen EDGMAN was a purchaser at the sale of the Estate of William Jolly, Inventory returned Jan 1836" (Roane Co, TN Estate Book B, 1828-1837, Pg. 281-283).
"Allen EDGMAN, 1WP" (1837 Roane Co, TN Tax List, 8th Dist). Same Tax District as William.
"Allen EDGMAN, 1WP" (1838 Roane Co, TN Tax List, 8th Dist). Same Tax District as William.
"Allen EDGMOND, 1WP" (1839 Roane Co, TN Tax List, 8th Dist). Same Tax District as William.

"Allen EDGMON, 1WP" (1840 Roane Co, TN Tax List, 8th Dist). Same Tax District as William.

"Allen EDGMON 21001-00001" (1840 Bradley Co, TN Census, Pg. 54). Allen [m 20-30] would be born between 1810 and 1820. Since he was paying a Poll tax in 1836, he would be born between 1810 and 1815. [f 20-30], [m 5-10], [m under 5], [m under 5].

"Mrs. GeorgAnn Edgeman-Kelsey of Athens,Tennessee is the official family historian. She has an Edgeman History that she is hoping to publish in 1990. William had a son by the name of Braxton, and GeorgAnn believes Braxton to have been the father of my greatgrandfather Allen Edgemon." (J.W. Henson)

"ALLEN EDGEMON, Born: 1811 in Tennessee, Died: Sep. 15, 1871, Buried: Salem Bapt. Ch. Cem., Married: Mahala C. Webb, Born: 1817, Tennessee, Died: Mar. 20, 1895, Buried: Salem Baptist Church Cemetery. Their monument is a tall slender oblisk with their vital statistics written on the sides. It is about eight inches square and four feet tall. I do not know what year it was raised above them, but the stone is not weathering well. It will be illegible in another 100 years." (J.W. Henson)
