My first competition was in the High Power Rifle Silhouette because I wanted to get a feel of the extreme ranges, the Rams are at 500 meters. To give you an idea, when you fire at the Ram, it is about two seconds after you have fired that you hear the "CLANG" of the metal if you have hit it. There is actually enough time to recover from the recoil of firing, see it fall in the scope and then a second later, hear the hit (here is a great MPEG file of a Ram Silhouette being shot at 500 meters VIDEO, One more showing, it might not be laying down, but it counts as a hit, One foot on One foot off).
My first match was in the High Powered Rifle Silhouette March 10th 2002. I was using my 1975 Remington Model 700 30.06, Hornady 150grain Light-Magnum ammo, I took a pounding and my shoulder showed it afterward. I shot a 12 out of 40 and was very happy with the results. The best part of that day was hitting the first 3 Turkeys I shot at and getting a total of 4 out of 10 on the hardest targets, then I made up for it by only hitting 2 Rams, Eeee Ha! The actual score was:
3 Chickens : 3 Pigs : 4 Turkeys : 2 Rams = 12/40
The rifle descriptions are:
A5418 = 2002 Anschutz Model 54.18 (1808MS)
A1712 = 2004 Anschutz Model 1712
V = 5 in a row - X = 10 in a row - XV = 15 in a row
NOTE on the NOTES attached to the scores. Some of the notes are just memories, some though are sharing information on faults & errors. Not that it is fun to realize you have screwed up but, I learn from them and sharing them might help others to realize or prevent their own.

NOTE: 03/01/08 - I had not shot since the December match. I had not used the Hunter rifle since October. I started to jerk the rifle in anticipation and screwed up several shots. It then flowed over into the standard rifle in the afternoon. More practice with the Hunter rifle is in order.
NOTE: 04/27/08 - It was a windy day. I shot the hunter rifle for the standard rifle too. This helped my Hunter rifle score a little. Shooting the Standard Rifle first, I was able to be well adjusted for the wind with that rifle by the time I shot the Hunter Rifle. I was tied with Jim Beckley for match winner. I won that in a five shot shoot-off. It started unspectacularly with two misses but, was followed with three consecutive hits. I was still fighting anxiety on the last shot but I was able to settle on target fairly quickly.
