NOTE:  Lost a tie for second in my first AAA shootoff with Kenn Backhaus, Great person, Great shooter.  It was a three way tie.  Kenn & I both hit, Dave Tetrault missed so he was out.  Kenn and I both hit again on the second shot.  I missed the third shot, Kenn hit.  It makes it interesting by the time you get to the third shot.

Nationals - Barely missed the completion of my grand slam, 3rd time with 9/10 Rams.  Had 10-in-a-Row on Chickens & Turkeys  I made a few mistakes here and there but I can't complain about the overall results.  I practiced for the competition and it paid off.

07/25/04 LOST an interesting shoot-off at Turkeys for 2nd place in AAA with Hugh Birnbaum: missed, missed, hit, hit, hit, I missed (He hit), it was fun!

08/29/04 Won my first shoot-off for 1st place in AAA with two Turkey hits.

Won my first match with the Hunter rifle on 03/28/04 almost 2 years to the day of my first Smallbore Rifle Silhouette match.  It was a crazy windy day and ithe wind seemed to be at its worse any time I had my Standard rifle in hand.  With the Hunter Rifle, on the Rams I shot the wrong animal on the 4th shot in the first set of five so it didn't count giving me a 1 for 5, but I finished with a 9 of 10 for 11 total and won the match by 1 shot over 3 people.

Nationals - Buying the Anschutz 1712 was a good idea!  I shot my first Master score and moved into AAA. It was the 4th highest score for that days match.  I could not have been happier unless my wife could have been there, she was in a hospital in Raton (all is well now).  Buying the new rifle and practice made an improvement.  The first day I was unfortunate, as was a few others, to shoot at the peak of some wind that came up.  There was a short period where it was strong enough to blow Rams off the stand and that is when I was shooting Rams.  With an average run on the last day I could have placed in the top 10, unfortunately it was below average.  Many bad shots with many near misses made for a poor performance on the last day.   I am still very happy with the overall results.

10/31/04 - Tied for the 3rd highest score for the match with the only other person in AAA Hunter (Kathleen Garvin) and lost the one shot shoot-off with her for 1st in AAA Hunter.

11/28/04 - Shot fairly well with both rifles in a match that got windy.  One hit off of a 15 in-a-row on turkeys (started there in calmer weather).  Lost 1st place in a three shot shoot-off with Kenn Backhaus.  It was a little calmer on our first shot and we both hit.  The second shot the wind was crazy and we both missed.  Kenn made an excellent shot in a fairly windy third shot to win over my miss.  On another not, our score was second high for the match.  The 5 on the Rams was my downfall.  I jerked about 4 shots and misread the wind on about the same amount, it all adds up.

NOTE:  11/24/02  I started on the turkeys that day.  I had my rifle vertical with the barrel in the slot on the bench.  On the first “Listo” to prepare to fire, I lifted my rifle, bumped it against the bench as I lifted it and knocked the rifle out of my hands, bouncing it down to the concrete.  It bounded directly on the objective lens of the scope, knocking the scope off of the rifle.  My first thought was, “I am screwed!”  Then I thought, “What the heck!  I have several minutes here.  I’ll re-mount the scope and see what happens.”  I broke out my trusty Leatherman tool and went to work.  By the time the second “Listo” command was heard, I had the scope on the rifle and could take a shot.  I shot at the top bank and saw no results at all - no dirt - nothing.  I took a shot at the lower bank of turkeys that I hadn’t shot and saw a pile of dirt fly two feet high and two feet left.  Knowing no scope in the world would take that adjustment; I said to myself again, “I am screwed!”  I made the rifle safe, took everything off the line and back to our bench.  I started thinking, “What the heck?  I already paid to shoot.  I may as well see what I can accomplish.”

The mounts I had were aluminum and I thought they were out of adjustment.  I assumed that the scope suffered no damage.  I pulled the bolt out, compared the bore to the scope and it did not look good.  When I first mounted the scope, I had to shim the back, so I worked quickly to remove the rear scope tube clamp enough to force out the shim and tighten it back down.  Bingo!  The vertical alignment was close to being in range!  I still had about two feet of windage to make up for, so I made a daring maneuver and grabbed the scope firmly in hand, wedged the rifle against the table, and twisted the scope against the aluminum mounts.  After a couple of tries; bingo number two!  The scope was back in alignment with the barrel.  I bore sighted it and was ready to give it a try.  Between all of this, I had to go shoot my 880sq in the Standard division.

I was ready by the time my relay started at the Rams, but because you can’t test fire during a match, I had to sight it while competing.  For my first shot, I saw dirt fly high, so I adjusted the scope down.  I shot at the second Ram and saw dirt fly way low and said, “Huh?”  I made an adjustment back up about the same amount I had gone down and shot the third Ram.  I saw dirt fly high again, and my wife, who was spotting for me, said, “You hit low.”  Again I said, “Huh?”  I didn’t know what to do, so I didn’t adjust anything and shot at the forth Ram.  We both saw it hit low.  We both saw the ricochet of the bullet on the first shot.  There were some shrubs that blocked the view of the first shot hitting the dirt.  It had confused both of us.  I adjusted quite a lot upward, and took aim at the fifth and final Ram for that bank.  I hit about four to six inches low.  I adjusted upward and could not shoot again until the next bank started, so I benched the rifle and waited.  By the time the “Listo” command was given, I had thought about my last adjustment and decided I needed to move it up another half minute.  I adjusted the scope a bit, took aim and I hit the first Ram.  In fact, I hit the first three; missed the forth; and hit the fifth for 4/5.  Considering everything I had gone through, I was feeling great!  I had managed to sight my rifle in 5 shots, shooting off-hand.  Unfortunately, I shot 1/5 on the next bank.  I did finish with a great score though, for not getting to shoot at all 20 targets.  I finished hitting 20/40, which was as good as I ever had shot with that rifle.
