Mary Rogers Brown Scholarship

My wife and I created this scholarship at Arkansas State University in memory of my grandmother who served on the faculty of ASU for over 30 years. I participated in the organization and fund raising activities. The fund is now fully endowed and awards scholarships to undergraduates majoring in Mathematics or Computer Science.

Chairman, Campaign to defeat Proposition "O"

Proposition "O" was a proposed local San Diego rent control measure. For this activity, I researched rent control laws in other cities, worked with a public relations firm to develop strategy, managed 1200 volunteers, and oversaw the fund raising of $450,000, the largest amount of money ever raised for a local initiative up to that point in time. I was primary debater for all media work and major public forums, the largest of which was attended by over 1,000 people. The measure was defeated 3-1.

Chairman, Board of Directors of Project Oz

Project Oz is a juvenile diversion program for troubled youth. In addition to the general duties of a chairman, I counseled runaway teenagers and conducted a public relations program in order to raise community awareness. My efforts and those of my co-volunteers eventually led to the County of San Diego adopting the program as a permanent agency.
