Quotation Marks



Direct Quotation:
  A speaker's direct (exact) words.

Indirect Quotation: Tells what someone says without using exact words.

1. Use quotation marks to set off a speaker's words from the rest of the sentence.  Always begin a direct quote with a capital letter.

Ex: "Here is Tasmania," she said.  "It is off the southeastern coast of Australia."

Ex: "Please reply," said Mr. Smith, "if you know the answer."


2. Use quotation marks around titles of short works: short story, articles, poem, chapter of a book, song, etc.  Capitalize important words.  Do not capitalize any unimportant words, such as: the, a, an, and, of, for, or, etc., unless they are the first or last word of the title.
