Currie Steering Gear Brace for SWB Jeeps

By James Hasler

Fourwheeling puts a lot of stress on our rigs and our steering definitely gets its fair share. You've got one front tire in the air and you've got the steering cranked to the right as you're trying to muscle your other front tire over a rock. You've essentially got your steering box and your steering linkage against your engine. Besides the potential to turn your tie-rod or drag-link into a pretzel, you also have the potential of ripping your steering box from the frame.

Well, one answer to the latter problem is to install a steering box brace. Currie makes a very heavy duty unit for CJ's, YJ's and TJ's. It's got a nice black powdercoated finish with zinc-anodized, Grade 8 hardware.

One side of your steering box is bolted to the frame and the brace simply ties the other side to the opposite frame rail.

Installation on my YJ was simple. The two halves of the clamps go around the steering gear. Make sure that the clamps are high enough such that they do not interfere with the proper rotation of the pitman arm.

The other end of the brace bolts up to pre-existing holes in the frame. You simply slip the supplied sleeves and bolts through the brace and holes and use the supplied lock nuts to finish off the job.

That's it! You end up with a reinforced steering box. Now you just have to go out and buy a heavy duty tie-rod and drag-link!!!!
