Tow Hooks for TJ's!!!

By James Hasler

After having the pleasure of strapping Andrew off of the top of Bronco Hill in Los Coyotes with my own tow hooks, I persuaded Andrew to purchase some of his own. Taking one of mine off everytime he wanted to show off was going to be tiresome.

So, Andrew bought two Pro-Comp10,000 lb tow hooks for the front of his TJ. He also bought some Grade 8 bolts after I stressed that I did not want his tow hooks going through my windshield.

Check out those cool black wheels on the YJ in the background! Damn! Now THERE'S a nice Jeep... :-)

However, we did not stop there. There are many articles on the web explaining how to mount a tow hook on the back of a TJ WITHOUT buying the Jeep dealers 100+ dollar bracket. (It may work on a YJ as well, but the shackle makes it trickier as it is in the way.)

Anyway, there is a large, rectangular hole in the bottom of the frame about 6 inches or so in front of the rear bumper. This hole allows a box wrench to be inserted into the frame to hold a nut. There's also already a hole that can be used. (The lower hole in the picture below.) The only thing that is needed is to drill the top hole for the hook. Since I had an extra hook, we pulled out the drill and went to town.

And there you have it. It's bolted to the frame just as the front ones are with Grade 8 bolts so it should be plenty strong. Notice the sloppy paint job on the hook as well. You can thank Andrew for that as he didn't appreciate that the FREE tow hook I provided him was chromed.

The rear hook has been thoroughly tested and has proven to be a VERY worthwhile addition.
