American Racing Type 767 Wheels

By James Hasler

After installing my Revolver Shackles, my 32x11.5 BFG A/T's on stock 15x7 wheels were just tucking TOO well. The tires were either being pinned against the front shock towers or tagging the rear frame rail. The solution? Get the wheels I've always wanted for my black YJ: American Racing's Type 767 black steel rims.

This way I could not only eliminate the binding when my revolver's did their thing, but I'd be getting an 8 inch rim which is more appropriate for a 11.5" tire. It would also allow me to move to a 12.5" tire as well. This should help me get more life out of the tire by not wearing down the center tread faster than the rest of the tread. I've also gained back my stock turning radius.

The only downside is that the tires stick out past the fender about 2.5 inches since I went to 4" of backspacing compared with the 5.5" on the stock 15x7" rims. Fender flares will probably go on the wish list now so I don't get any fix-it tickets and so that I preserve my paint job a bit longer.

As you can see, the center cap offered by American Racing is chrome. As I "Don't Do Chrome", I decided to not use a cap at all. This necessitated painting my hubs with some black paint, but that's no biggie. The other thing that I didn't like was the blue and red stripe along the rim. Again, the black paint came to the rescue. Here's what they look like mounted on my YJ.

I should have gone with the black letters, but I don't mind advertising for BFG...they are great tires!

The wheels should be plenty strong to take any abuse and they have a think, black powdercoat finish that should resist scratches.
