This space will be saved for the COB.
Do you have some COB tid-bit's?
Don't be shy .... your COB wasn't. ... Thank God !!!
You see I have a dream.
There was a time, about 1912 - 1914 or so, when the COB,
was a new and unique position. It still is ... unique.
There are not many positions in the Armed Service yet
today, that equal the
respect, that the Chief of the Boat receives. I would
like to Honor that position
in my small way, by finding out who was the very first
COB, what Boat, what year,
who was the Skipper and most important what was the reason,
for creating the
position in the first place.

First Chief of the Boat ................................. W.H.Reader

First Boat to have COB ............................... USS Holland
SS1
First Skipper to have COB .......................... LT
H.H. Caldwell
Back in the first days of Submarines, the Chief of the Boat was the
executive officer, in
fact, if not in name, for the commanding officer was the only commissioned
officer on board.
The original crew of Holland, consisted of five men and one officer
as captain.
INFORMATION FROM ALL HANDS OCT.-1983
The question "the reason for creating the position" may be in
the fact that, there
was only one Chief in the crew, hence the name "Chief of the Boat"
and so it
remained, even after they started carrying an executive officer.
Send me your ideas, ya throw a thought out on the deck, you never know
what will
happen, or even what it will look like, when it comes back .....
