RADIO Dedicated to Old Time Radio, Top-40 radio, airchecks, demos, audio production, and to good radio of all kinds.
| I started in radio at
KECK (1530 AM) and KHAT (106.3 FM), in Lincoln, Neb helping
Don Crawley with
the "Sunday Morning Country Style" show. When Don Went to the legendary
WDAF
61
Country in Kansas City, the station hired me to do the show.
Less than
a year later I left KECK/KHAT to do weekends at KBHL (New Life 95) for
Dewey Boynton. In 1981 I followed Scott Campbell for a short stint at
KGRL
and KXIQ,
Bend. I worked at KLIN
AM/FM, Lincoln in 1982-84 and left radio to go to
seminary. Since
then I've done shows in Kansas City (KCCV-AM) and Los Angeles (KBRT). You can reach me at rsclericus at gmail dot com My work site The Heidelblog CrossTalk
![]() Scott Campbell on the air at KGRL in 1981. He wasn't too pleased that I was taking his picture. | Scott Campbell: A Radio Pioneer One of the people who got me started in radio was the late Scott Campbell. He was a successful top-40 air personality in the 1960s. In the late 60s he pioneered the contemporary Christian radio format at KARI, Blaine, WA. He took that format to KSON San Diego, KFMK-FM, Houston and finally to KBHL-FM, Lincoln, Neb. Here is an aircheck from the mid-60s as Scott signs on as Bob Campbell at KLOG, Kelso, WA. Here's Scott having fun on the air at KPUG, Bellingham circa 1967 and a brief clip of him on the air at Color Radio Channel 95, KJR Seattle in 1968 where Pat O'Day gave him the air name "Scott Campbell" | ![]() The on-air studio at KGRL, Bend in 1981. Truth in advertising: I wasn't actually on the air just then. It was 1:00 AM and I had just finished another marathon production shift when Don Best stopped by and wanted to take photos. Thanks Don!
![]() Bob Kellogg on the air at KLIN Lincoln in 1984 | Production Fun One of my favorite pieces of production of all time came from Columbia Records. They bought time on KBHL in 1980 and here's the spot. Here is another spot, a PSA, featuring one of the great voices and talents in radio history Orson Welles with another great talent, Vincent Price. What follows is perhaps my favorite production demo of all time. Gerry Logan was production director at KLMS for several years. He also worked at KBHL for a time. I never worked with him but got to know him anyway. This tape is from the 70s, well before digital editing. Gerry was a master with the razor blade and a cutting block. | Old Time Radio Currently I'm listening to The Adventures of Sam Spade.
![]() | KLMS: Lincoln's Top-40
Station The Mighty 1290 KOIL in Omaha rightly gets a lot of attention as a pioneering Top-40 radio station. An amazing number of gifted air personalities worked there over the years. The state capital just west of Omaha had its own high-energy, top-40 power house, the Great 148 KLMS in the 60s and 70s. Here are a couple of airchecks from a couple of friends who worked there in the 70s. The first is from Chris Abercrombie doing AM drive in 1972. The second is from Don Crawley doing evenings and nights. |
