OscarSights Top Movies Of 2001

01.) Moulin Rouge!

This is a runaway for the top spot. Moulin Rouge! is one of the greatest spectacles and musicals I have ever seen, and I have seen a lot. I also like this film because it has brought the movie/musical back into the limelight. Both performances here are outstanding as well. Nicole Kidman should have WON the Oscar and Ewan McGregor deserved at least a nod. The overall production of the movie is outstanding, and the direction (I still can't believe they didn't nominate Baz Luhrman) is some of the best I have ever seen. The music choices are what really impressed me, and the love song from the movie "Come What May" as well. You would think that using older love songs in a modern-day musical would prove disastrous, but it was anything but disaster. It was masterpiece. By far, my favorite movie of last year.

02.) A Beautiful Mind

Some of the critics and most of the movie-goers were entirely TOO mean to this movie. It's an amazing story about a very intelligent man, and no one could have played the role like Russell Crowe. He was all-out ROBBED last year of the Oscar. Sad that politics play such a big part because this was the most amazing performance of last year, and in my opinion the greatest performance by an actor I have ever seen. Jennifer Connelly did great as well, as the wife who stuck by her man through thick and thin. John Nash might have a beautiful mind, but you can also see he has a beautiful heart, as Crowe shows at the end of this movie in his heartfelt and tearjerking speech and presence.

03.) Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring

I can hardly wait to see all three of the movies in this epic all the way through, non-stop. The Lord Of The Rings movie franchise will go down in history as one of the greatest cinematic events of all time. The sequel is here and next year comes the third. When I first saw this movie, I loved it, but was left a little out in left-field, because of the material being a little hard to follow. Over the past few months, I have watched this movie about 7 times and each time I pick up more and fall in love with it more. The visuals in this movie are unbeatable and the acting is a gem as well. The first third of this epic is very well done, and I can't wait to see where the last two thirds end up.

04.) In The Bedroom

I remember going into the theaters to see this movie and I thought to myself, "They said this was a slow movie, so I know I won't love it." I was so wrong. I fell in love with this picture. This is definitely the acting ensemble of the year from 2001. Sissy Spacek made one of the biggest and best comebacks in Hollywood, Tom Wilkinson showed that he has huge range and he plays the dramatic role amazingly, and Marisa Tomei took a chance at the role of an older woman and she did it amazingly. Nick Stahl did great as well. The pain that exudes from the screen from Tomei, Wikinson, and especially Spacek is heart-wrenching. This is one of the best family tragedy/dramas of our time.

05.) Life With Judy Garland: Me & My Shadows

Although this movie was not released on the big screens, it is one of, if not THE, best Made For TV Movie I have seen. Judy Garland has always been a favorite of mine, and I have thought that people have not known the real Garland, and that they misunderstood her life. This movie showed the pain that Garland went through. The basic synopsis of the movie was: "Dorothy found the end of the rainbow, but Judy spent all her life looking for it." That is so true. The acting is what stood out here. Judy Davis and Tammy Blanchard both gave performances that earned them both Emmy Awards, and deservedly so. Their transformations to Garland are breathtaking.

06.) Mulholland Dr.

I saw this movie in March of 2002. I hated it. I currently rented it again and watched it around 3 times and it made a little more sense. Don't see this movie if you're not in the mood for a mystery, because it is one of the biggest movies I have ever seen that has really messed with my mind in trying to figure out it's plot. You can't just watch it once. I made that mistake and regret it now. I now think this is one of the best of last year, by far. I actually recommend watching it once without knowing what it's about to try to figure it out on your own. Then, go on the internet and read up on explanations of the movie and watch it a time or two again. Some things don't make sense at all, but that's what the amazing director David Lynch was aiming for; a movie that would mess with your mind so much that you can't think of anything else but the movie. Mulholland Dr. does that like no other movie has before for me.

07.) Memento

Here's yet another movie that messes with your mind, but not as bad as Drive. Still, you must pay attention explicitly to figure things out. The thing that confuses people the most is that this movie is backwards in chronological order. The end of the story is at the first of the movie and the beginning of the story is at the end of the movie. It sounds confusing, but it is one of the best of last year. Guy Pearce did an outstanding job, as did Carrie-Anne Moss. The movie pushed buttons in your mind that you've never used before. It makes you think, and just like Mulholland Dr., if you want a mystery that makes your mind really work, see these two. They are truly mind-boggling.

08.) Monster's Ball

This movie really surprised me after viewing it in early 2002. Many people talk about the acting, and it WAS great, but the story was equally well done. This movie dealt with racial issues in modern-day society very well. Halle Berry broke the mold of 'just a pretty face' with this stunning role. However, I do find her performance overrated, and that Oscar should be in Nicole Kidman's or Sissy Spacek's hands, not hers. She was in line for a nod, but not a win. Billy Bob Thornton's performance has been underappreciated, in my opinion. He deserved an Oscar nod as he did equally well as Berry. Overall, this movie worked, when it could have failed miserably.

09.) Legally Blonde

I know that some of you, after seeing all the quality movies above are saying, "You have Legally Blonde in the mix with these films?" Well, yes I do. This was definitely the best comedy of last year. Reese Witherspoon's name became a household name, and deservedly so. This is the movie that put her on the map, and I'm glad it did. No one could have played this role like Witherspoon. This is the movie that made me laugh out loud the most from 2001. The plot may have been a little far-fetched, but sometimes, far-fetched plots really work, and this one did, mostly due to the remarkable Witherspoon.

10.) Shrek

Everytime I see this movie, I smile. This was the best animated movie of 2001, and one of the best movies, period. I love the way that adult humor was mixed in with the children humor. The plot was so funny and played out very well by Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz, and John Lithgow. I also like the concept of beauty being in the inside, not the outside. This is an animated movie that will go down in the history books as a classic.
