SuperSprint Muffler


Here are some pics detailing the installation of a SuperSprint muffler.  I did nothing else to the exhaust system - just hacked off the factory muffler, cut the rear-lower valence, and glued on the new muffler (thanks to Alex!).

This shot shows the beginning of the job - the old muffler has been replaced by the SuperSprint part, and is hanging down beneath the rear valence.  I used a floorjack to hold the muffler right up against the body so I could accurately mark the valence for cutting.

   

This shot shows the default fore/aft position of the tips - where my exhaust guy wanted to leave them.  I thought they were way too far back...

   

I cut the valence with a dremel moto-tool with a cutoff wheel installed.  The plastic is quite soft, and cuts well.  More surprisingly, the part was molded in body-color, so I didn't have to paint the cut area!

You can see how low the muffler hung at this point.

   

In this photo the valence cut is complete, and just needs cleaning-up.  I used a combination of dremel rotary cutting tools and jeweler's files.  The whole process took maybe 15 minutes.

   

All cleaned up - you can see the pen marks have not yet been cleaned off.  Also noticeable is the mis-alignment of the muffler - the tips are not parallel to the ground...

   

In this shot, I've pushed the muffler forward to where I want it - I had to break the tack welds to do this, but in the end I think it was worth the effort.

The muffler is sitting on the floorjack again - I was trying to decide how close I could get it to the valence/suspension.

In this shot, the car has been back down to the muffler shop, and the muffler aligned and fully welded to the exhaust pipe. (STILL haven't cleaned off the scribe marks!).

   

This side shot shows just how close the muffler sits in the valence cutout, and how far forward I was able to get the tips.

   

Same shot, opposite view.  While the valence cutout is visible in this view, you don't see it at all from a regular perspective.

See that stain on the carpet in my work area?  Very interesting story behind that one... :)

   

Top view.  One thing to notice is the line of the cutout just above the left tip.  You can see it looks slightly deformed - because it is.  I was picking the kids up from school one day, and a soccer mom in a Suburban death-battleship was backing up right toward me, and to get out of her way, I had to back up quickly and wound up running the bottom of the tips up over a tall curb - the muffler was pushed up into the valence and "bent" the plastic.  It's easy to reform the valence - I just haven't done so yet.

It's worth mentioning that as a result of this incident, the muffler (including the chrome) wasn't damaged at all.  SuperSprint is definitely good-quality stuff!

   

Last view, dead astern, very low down.  If you look in the reflection of the rear bumper you can see just how far the tips stick out.

 Another thing to mention - people were concerned that having the tips this close to the valence might melt the valence.  As it turns out, when the rubber grommet on the mounting stud heats up, it actually allows the muffler to "sag" about 1/4" - automatically increasing the clearance!  As soon as it cools off, the muffler draws back up to where it was.  Even if it didn't do this, I don't think the tips get hot enough to do any damage - as you can see in this pic, the paint shows no signs of cracking whatsoever.
