Revision 8/13/08
First-The Gamma Omega Chapter has once again (twice in a row) earned the Peterson Significant Chapter Award, the highest honor given to a Chapter in the International Fraternity. Please take the time to congratulate Keith Moody, Chapter Advisor at keith.moody@sbcglobal.net and the actives through Consul Greg Heaphy at greg.heaphy@uconn.edu There are four events of immediate interest. Saturday August 30th , there will be a Bar-B-Que at the Husky Village house
at 12:00 Noon. Saturday Sept. 6th, 1:00 PM at Husky Village, John Bowlin
and his crew will host the Annual Pig Roast. This is an event that should not be
missed. Over the past few years this has been critical to the success of the
Chapter. The Alums and the Actives really get to show how Sigs do a party right.
Later we've retreated to Ted's or the off-campus house and continued the
festivities into the night. Saturday Sept. 13th, We will tailgate at the UConn-Virginia Football game with Lan Cameron, Jeff Sprankle , Neyah Kane Bennett and myself in the North East (Blue) Parking Lot at Rentschler Field. This year finding us should be easier now that we've got our flag. This should be a great game too. We are really looking forward to getting a little revenge on last year's one point loss on their turf.
Sunday Sept 14th, Greg Valente, Rusty Cushman, Ray Nilson, Randy Coppola,
Ken Scussel and others will be having their annual trip to the Jets-Patriots NFL
football game. Last year, when Rusty Cushman refused to film for Bill Bilcheck,
he was forced to find a stooge on the sidelines. The rest is history. Anyway, I
went last year and had a great tailgate party with them and this year they are
asking if any other Sigs would like to come along. You can contact Greg at gvalente@sbcglobal.net Recent History:
Last Alumni event we had was our June Hike. This year we went to Sleeping Giant State Park. The venue was excellent for our little group of me, Rusty Cushman, Ray Nielson and their partners Katrina and Jessica respectively. The weather was great and we had a nice view of New Haven and Central Connecticut from the tower.
The July Harbor Cruise was a flop due to lack of interest
this year. In discussion with some of the guys, we might try a kayak paddle on
the Farmington or Connecticut Rivers next year. I am truly interested in hosting
events people will commit to do. Send me ideas that might be good for the Alumni
Brothers, Brothers and wives, or Brothers and whole families. I am assuming that
after our great 65th Anniversary Event, you guys wanted to lay back awhile.
Now's the time to get back into it. Come meet us at the Pig Roast at UConn. Call
a Brother, buy a couple of tickets to the game and join us Sept 13th. If you
want to sit with other Sigs I can probably hook people up. Send me an email.

For now... In Hoc Signo Vinces, Hello brothers, Memorial Day, the un-official start of summer has come and gone. Most of us are settling in our routines of cutting grass, summer sports and making vacation plans. Some of us are including Sigma Chi in those plans. I want to recognize Keith Moody, Carl Graveline and myself for arranging to go to Balfour Leadership Training Workshop. Keith will be facilitating once again, while Carl and I will be participating in the Chapter Advisor curriculum.
Now, I'd like to take the opportunity to announce that Keith Moody '89, has been selected for the Fraternity's Outstanding Chapter Advisor Award for his efforts and accomplishments with UConn's Gamma Omega Chapter. As many of you know, Keith goes above and beyond the call of duty in his roll. The powers-that-be have made a wise decision.
The latest edition of Gamma Omega Times by Nick Wong and the UConn Chapter has been published. Please click on the link below to see the class-A job produced.
http://members.cox.net/agpa1/SigmaChiTimesSpring20085-15-08.pdf
Nick is the Chapter Tribune (Alumni Secretary) and Historian. He is soliticing donations for small plaques for our house that describe the significance of our Chapter composites, paddles, awards, our old house letters and even the old banister from the Whitney Road House. Each plaque will cost approximately $30.00. He can be contacted at nd4spdlsc@gmail.com
Also, please check out the website www.sigmachihartford.com . Click on the link for Composite pictures on the left and you will see scans of all the small composites in the Gamma Omega archives. Thanks go out to Steve Norcia and Walt Ruggles for contributing. If any of you alumni have copies that aren't posted, let me know. I'd love to keep this growing as they are great reference for the Alumni Chapter as well as reminiscing the glory days.
UNH Colony Notes The Sigma Chi Lambdas will be participating in-force at BLTW. Nine are registering to gain insights in running their new Chapter and the various officer rolls they will be filling. Thank all of you alumni who have volunteered to be big-brothers to them. We regret we didn't have time to coordinate a ceremony prior to the end of the semester, and hope to schedule an event at the beginning of the school year. Ross Seigel is running the event. If you haven't yet volunteered and would like to participate contact him at rcsiegel@hotmail.com. He will try to pair you up with an undergrad with similar career goals.
Yale Chapter Notes As many of you know, Yale's house was destroyed over the winter break due to a pipe-bursting. The house is currently being rebuilt with insurance money coming from Sigma Chi's Constantine Capital
Upcoming EventsThe Alumni Chapter will hold its Second Annual June Hike. This year I invite you all to Sleeping Giant State Park, in Hamden CT, on Sunday June 8th. The park has several trails of various grades. I'm sure we can select a path that best suits the group that joins us. Meet us at the parking lot of Mt. Carmel Ave. at 11:00 AM. Bring your own food, drinks, music, cameras, binoculars and gear. Below is a link to their website and a link to a pdf file of their trail map. Should be a nice outing and low impact on the wallet. Parking fees on the weekend are $10.00

At this event we can discuss plans for having a monthly dinner meetings and our schedule of events. Please join us to picnic even if you don't plan to hike. On the agenda is a repeat of the July Harbor Cruise, Pig Roast and tailgating with the undergrads. Kudos go out to John Bowlin for once again leading the Pig Roast event. This has been a major success as far as Fall recruitment goes for the Gamma Omega Chapter. Details will come over the summer, Alumni are welcomed and encouraged to participate. Please support the effort any way you can. This is a great venue to show what our organization can do.

Revision April 19th 2008 65 th On-Line Videos Available Thanks to the efforts of brother Steven McGuinness, we have these great videos to remind us of the wonderfull event we just had. In a letter to the attendees and Chapter, steve writes: Dear Brothers
For those of you lucky enough you have joined in possibly the Chapter's best event ever. Thank you. You made it everything we thought it could be.We truly hope you enjoyed any of the aspects you participated in. Special thanks to Keith Moody, Caron and Mark Paniccia, Tiffany and "Big Daddy" Chris Hunt, and the 65th Team of Dean Goss, Carl Graveline and Nick Wong, for all their efforts in making it happen. I just got the easy part, helping to connect with the best brothers who ever graced the portals of the University of Connecticut. Next, I'm pleased to announce that $1374.00 was raised for the Huntsman Cancer Research Institute through the raffle. I'd also like to thank those who donated to the undergraduate Chapter. Thank you Mike Ursillo and Kevin Cook for helping present the Order of Contantine award to brother Tony Troiano for his years of service and dedication to the Fraternity. Thank you to General Eddi Zyko, for presenting the Sigma Chi Military Service Pins, Eric Hanson for his wonderful Harry St. John-Dixon monalogue, Watts Wacker for his address, and Rachel Berkey, International Sweetheart, for joining us from Harvard. Also thanks to the Military Service Pin recipiants who joined us in their dress uniforms. I also want to mention at least 18 Chapter Consuls and Presidents were in attendance from all the decades from the 40s to the current Gamma Omega Consul Jacob Herrewyn Congratulations to the ALUMNI Softball Team for maintaining the longest running winning streak in the Fraternal Sports League. Apparently, alumni brothers always win. Congratulations to Tom Kascak on winning the Alumni Golf Outing, followed by Matt Saywer and Bob Stack Copies of the 65th Anniversary video are still available. Please follow the link on the left. I have posted several of the pictutres at the link below Unfortunately the quality of my pictures of my picnic came out pretty poor due to a mis-setting on my camera. If you have pictures or videos, I'd be happy to add them here. Enjoy. In Hoc, Bob Stack Alumni Big Brothers sought for University of New Haven Colony pledges Ross Seigel wrote this past week the following request. This is a great opportunity to be involved in the founding of the new Chapter amd extending your family tree: Dear Brothers,As many of may know, Sigma Chi recently expanded to the University of New Haven. On March 14th, the Greater Hartford Alumni Chapter assisted in tapping-in the new colony, known as Sigma Chi Lambda. Many former Gamma Omega alumni currently serve on the colony's advisory board including Jeff Micklus (Chapter Advisor), Chris Hunt and Peter Keefe (Magisters) and Bob Stack (Alumni Relations Advisor). As an officer in the Hartford Alumni Chapter, I am currently assisting Jeff Micklus in recruiting alumni to serve as Big Brothers for the Alpha Class at UNH. The only requirements would be attendance at a Big Bro/Little Bro ceremony, followed by dinner, in the New Haven area at a date TBD. All other communication/advisement/meetings/etc. would be conducted at your convenience. We are attempting to match undergrads with alumni based on majors/career interests. The colony currently has 24 members with a diverse range of majors, which I have listed below: 7 - Criminal Justice/Law Enforcement 6 - Fire Science/Arson Investigation (Fire Fighting) 2 - Sports Management 2 - Accounting 2 - Music & Sound Recording 1 - Business Administration 1 - Forensic Science 1 - Law/Poli Sci 1 - Engineering 1 - Marine Bio & Environmental Science Depending on the level of interest, we may pair multiple undergrads with a single alumni. If you are interested in serving as an Alumni Big Brother, please let me know at your earliest convenience. Be sure to include your profession/area of expertise and any preference of undergraduate major. (NOTE: If there is not a match to your profession, please do not let this prevent you from expressing your interest!) Thank you all for your time. IHSV, Ross Siegel VP, Greater Hartford Alumni Chapter Please respond to Ross at his email addrss: rcsiegel@hotmail.com
Revision March 01, 2008 Newsletter Ski Trip Rusty Cushman and Jeff Micklus reported a great skiing weekend Feb 2nd-3rd at Sugarbush for the second annual ski event and the first Sig Ski-a-poluzza. The guys were accompanied by their girlfriends Catrina and Alexi. The downside of the event was terrible weather on the trip up. Rusty reported a 61/2 hour travel from Stratford. While Jeff Haney got as far as Manchester VT before he decided he had enough. Here's what Rusty had to say: We had a good time once we got there. We went to Mad River Glen (ski it if you can) on Saturday afternoon and Lexi got her initiation (so to speak) into skiing. Jeff made it up and down the single chair, with relatively minor injuries (your first concussion is usually considered mild, is it not?). Jeff was Ms. Pacman king for a day. The darts and Scrabble games ended in draws due to battle fatigue. Catrina and I got a little snowboarding in on Sunday at the Bush and left in time to see the history of last night. Catrina and Jeff have the pics so hopefully they will get some out to everyone. ![]() ![]()
UConn Sigs Support Province Conference Feb 23 Several of the Greater Hartford Chapter Alumni recently helped facilitate at the Eastern New York-Connecticut Province Conference. Big Daddy, Chris Hunt, spoke on Chapter Finances with Keith Moody. I, Bob Stack, spoke with Damon Kimble on website development and later with Damon and Tom Cole on alumni relations. Peter Keefe joined the group to help introduce an intrest party from the University of New Haven to Sigma Chi in hopes that they recognized as a Colony of Sigma Chi.
GHAC Sigs lead the way in Alumni Support of University of New Haven Colony. I want to thank those who have risen to the occasion and volunteered to take leadership positions in the Alumni Advisory Board for the New Haven Group. We are all excited to be able to help leave our mark and expand our brotherhood across the state. Currently, the group consists of 24 young men who made a formal petition to Grand Praetor J.B. Allen. The university presently has a greek presence, but in their words they were looking for something better. They currently have a calendar of social and philanthropic activities and have a "Mission 365" rush program. The chapter will need a 35 member undergraduate roster as a requirement to admittance. J.B. has advised them to use the Peterson guidelines as a roadmap to successful admittance into Sigma Chi.
Alumni Support for Spring Rush Unfortunately due to weather "again" support at the undergraduates rush bar-b-que was a little light. But even without our assistance, the undergrads report 12 new pledges. There is also one undergrad who was held over from last semenster. Plus, there is one individual, Christopher Doran, from Greenwich who recognizes what we have to offer, even at the age of 38. Glad to have you with us Chris. Hopefully the Chapter will benefit from your years.

Thanks to Tim Brennan, Bob Stack, Tony Troiano and Kevin Cook, the chapter has three large wooden scrap books covering the history of Gamma Omega from 1911 (Athenian Society) to Sigma Chi 1943, to Sigma Chi Alpha, and to the present. To ensure that all brothers could have a copy of this robust history, I hired Ron Davis at Video Labs in Orange, CT to capture all the scrap book pictures, plus pictures submitted by several Alumni, and create a chronological slide show, set to music that captures the era. This project was massive and costly but I fronted the funds for the creation and 100 copies for the 65th. I've attached the order form for brothers that cannot attend the 65th. There will be a $5 discount for anybody attending the 65th. I have 94 copies remaining to be sold. If all copies are sold at the 65th than I will break-even on the creation and copy cost. The DVD contains historical gems - photos of the original Alpha Phi and Sigma Chi house, and has coverage of all brother and every event from 1985-1993, and again in 2004-2007.
GHAC Meetings Lastly, we want to note that the GHAC meets at Rockledge Country Club the second Wednesday of every month. Unfortunately, we recognize that most of us have to work and that attendence is primarily limited to the brothers fortunate enough to have reached retirement age. Otherwise, all are welcome with open hearts. There is usually more tales of the glory years than GHAC business going on. Call me if you can make it and I will make a special effort to get there and introduce you to the gang. Bob Stack work phone 413-526-2977. Revision January 25, 08 3. Registration for the 65th is increasing with lots of verbal commitments. Please send in your paperwork.. Keith, Carl Graveline, Ross Seigel, Dean Goss and myself have been making calls and trying to enlist your support. This is going to be the highlight of our calendar this year. Please contact your brothers and lets all get together in April. Details and forms on www.sigmachihartford.com 4.) Big Brother Tree off www.sigmachihartford.com has over 150 names now. Most of the pledge classes are represented, and there are lines that run 15 years. Unfortunately, there are a lot of missing links and dead ends. We need your help to expand it. So if you have any info on how this can be expanded, let me know. I can provide an alumni list upon request. 5.) I want to start working on an Officers List. If you were a Consul, ProConsul, Queastor or Magister, please write back and let me know what years. If you can tell me who the officer was before or after you, then that will help too. I’d like to get the Officers together for a group photo at the 65th Banquet, so I need to know who to contact. No other events are scheduled at this time. Hopefully we can do a repeat performance of our June Hike and July Harbor Cruse. In Hoc, Bob Stack '82
Revision January 1, 08 Please click on the icon below to access The Gamma Omega Times, Volume 2, Dec. 15, 07 as published by Nick Wong and the Gamma Omega Undergraduate Chapter. Great job Nick. From Brother Keith Moody, Chapter Advisor, Asst. Grand Preator: For the Spring 2008 Initiation to be held on Saturday April 12, the chapter extends an offer to Alumni to take an active roll in the upcoming special 65th Anniversary Initiation. Please let Keith Moody know by February 15, 2008 so the chapter can plan accordingly. The Gamma Omega Chapter of Sigma Chi and the Greater Hartford Alumni Chapter would also like to extend the opportunity of initiation to any brothers of Sigma Chi Alpha, our UConn Alumni from '50-'74, who have not yet been initaiated into Sigma Chi. For more information, contact Keith Moody at keith.moody@sbcglobal.net or Bob Stack at rstack44@aol.com Over 50 Participants have registered to date and many many more have pledged to attend. Attendance list is available upon request. We are expecting over 100 attendees at UConn between April 11 - 13, 2008 to celebrate the 65th year of Gamma Omega Chapter receiving the Sigma Chi charter in April 1943.
Zenny's Banquet Hall has been reserved. Alumni list of RSVPs as of 12/24/07: The weekend is designed for you to select the events that appeal most for you, your wife, family and friends.
![]() A personal note from Bob Stack I wish to thank all who have participated so far in building the Big-Brother Little Brother Tree (which is accessed by the icon on the left). Over 150 brothers names, over six decades of brotherhood have been included. We have a long way to go to fully trace our roots, but we have representaion from almost every pledge class from the re-installation to the last class initiated. My intention is to present a mural sized graphic at the 65th, where those in attendance will be welcome to autograph, help fill-in gaps and make corrections. A follow-up project will be to record a list of Chapter Officers down through the years. I am hoping to have group photographs taken at the 65th of Past Consuls, Queastors, Magisters... If you were an undergraduate leader, please make every effort to be included in this Celebration. Other News: Unfortunately we have to report the Brother Jeffrey Sherman '75, of McLean VA, passed to Chapter Eternal this past October. Jeffrey was a significant member of his community and one of the brothers active in Sigma Chi's reinstallation on the UConn Campus.
Also wish to note our Alumni Chapter was well represented in the The Magazine of Sigma Chi Fall-Winter Issue. Brother Donald Frahm, of Avon, an alum of Washington University of St. Louis was recognized as a Significant Sig due to his accomplishments as CEO of ITT Hartford Insurance and his active community involvement at the University of Hartford, Hartford Hospital and the Chamber of Commerce. Our Alumni News was posted. Two new Life Loyal Sigs, Matt Boucher and Homer Boynton were announced. Our undergrads were shown displaying their coveted Peterson Award on page 55, and the Chapter & Josh Rabinowitz got more ink on page 58. Unfortunately six of our brothers were listed as entering Chapter Eternal. In addition to those noted below, we must add Dr. William Edgerton '45, John Grimshaw '50 and Kenneth Risberg '50. Guard well brothers. News From Headquartes Click on image above Lastly I want to note that Brother James J. Stotler, Jr.'94 is currently serving in Iraq with the US Navy. According to his wife Michelle, he is stationed the Basrah Air Station with MND-SE (Multi-National Division -South East) as a US liaison with the British military. She sent us this picture of him seated on one of Sadam's thrones. _______________________________________________________________________ Revision: December '07 Hello Brothers, Fall Initiation I'm proud to report on the Fall "I" at the Gamma Omega Chapter at UConn. Seven young men were brought into the brotherhood in one of the better performances of the Ritual in recent memory. The venue, at the Masonic Lodge on Rte 32, was excellent. How nice it was to have use of a building, purpose-built for just such an occasion. I personally thought the undergrads did a great job. I solicited comments from a few of the brothers afterward, and would like to quote Chris Hunt, Ritual Advisor, as follows: "I feel that the active chapter has come so far from where they were five years ago. The parts for our Initiation ceremony, while not flawless, were leaps and bounds above where they had been recently.... ... Congratulations on a successful semester to all the Brothers! I look forward to a repeat performance in the Spring - lets make it the best recruitment we have ever had - just in time for the 65th in April!" Ross, Keith and I want to thank the alumni who supported the event. There were Sig alumni present from the 40's, 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's and 2000's, including the following: Above is not necessarily in order, but close. Hopefully we got all your names. This attendance shows our bonds are truly strong. I look forward to the roar of voices at April's "I" and the 65th Celebration. We need you brother to help us reach our goal of 100 alumni attendance in April. Help spread the word. Write back or call 860-745-6102 if you have any questions or concerns. Peter Keefe, Steve McGuinness, Bob Stack, Keith Moody & Dean Goss at the Friday Pre-Initiation Dinner
Manchester Road Race Thanksgiving Day our Sigma Chi Alumni Team did a great job showing the Blue & Gold in the 71st Annual Manchester Road Race. Participating brothers included Bob Stack, Keith Moody, Paul Lalancete and Robert "Rusty" Cushman. We were also joined by Paul's nephew, Daniel Lalancete, who was between deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan with the Marines. As for results, Keith lead the pack with an impressive 33 minute finish in the 4.7 mile race, followed by Danny, Paul, Rusty then Bob coming in at 48 minutes. Looking on the bright side, Bob worked out 45% longer than Keith. Fun was had by all and we all left with the intention of making this a regular event. Join us next year. Danny Lalancette, USMC, Brothers Paul Lalancette, Bob Stack, Keith Moody & Rusty Cushman
UConn Football There are several undergrads and alumni who are "on the fence" about making a run down to the Mienke Car Care Bowl in Charlotte. Apparently, Josh Rabinowiz has some connections with Mariott that we might be able to take advantage of. I've been by that stadium before and staying at the downtown Marriott would be good as it's within walking distance and parking there is awful. I've been looking on-line and I see that individual side-line tickets are no longer available on Ticketmaster, but can be obtained on Stubhub for a price. Blocks tickets seem to be available if we can get a group together. Write me back if you can commit to go, Rstack44@aol.com, and I'll try to help arrange things (Not sure if I can make it myself.)
Below are a couple of great shots I took at the UConn-South Florida game with my cell phone camera. Note the students rushing the field. What a great moment. Brother Sprankle was out there somewhere too!
Other Events Graduate student, brother Matthew Boucher was written up in last month's UConn Frontier News Magazine for his successful biodiesel pilot-plant. The project demonstrated a continuous feed process for converting used vegetable cooking oil to clean, "no sulfur" diesel fuel for use in vehicles. Click picture for full iext of article Website Note that there is a button that brings up a big-brother little brother tree. If you would like to help us fill it in with your name, write me back. Also, the right hand column has been reserved for Sig professionals who would like to donate to the Chapter. Right now we are not charging any dues and are not asking for any money in order to be inclusive to all local and Gamma Omega alumni. If interested, a block of space and/or link to your site would provided as an acknowedgement of your gift.
Revision November 15, 2007 Hello Brothers, In case you will be attending the final home football game of the year, this weekend's UConn-Syracuse match-up,. our regular bunch of alums form the 90's plus a few others should be in the regular area in Section C, Blue Lot on the Northwest side of the Rent under a white tent. Now, we should be a quite a bit easier to spot with a new flag donated by Charlie Basil '81 and a flagpole courtesy of me. In case you haven't seen a Sigma Chi flag in recent memory, this is what to look for-
I won't be in attendance this time, so look for Jeff Sprankle, Lan Cameron & Scott Scherban and say hello. If you Sigma Chi Alpha's want to use the tailgate as a rallying point too, our pole has clips for two flags, we just have to come up with one. One of the paddles at the house has a red flag with a white cross with gold Sigma Chi Alpha letters in the lower right corner and five stars in the upper left. Also, I am looking for a nice picture of the Sigma Chi Alpha house, Russell A dorm in Northwest Quad (Frats), with letters on it, to scan and put on the timeline on our website. I will be happy to return it afterward. Other news: - I attended Wednesday's luncheon at Rockledge with Peter Keefe '67, and the guys from the early 50's. They passed on some sad news that Brothers Tom McVerry '52, Lou Anastasiou '51, Jack Cheeseman '51 and Richard Ryan '54 had recently entered Chapter Eternal. If you have any personal announcements, weddings, births, adoptions or losses, I'd be happy to list them here and on the website. www.sigmachihartford.com Get your 65th Anniversary registrations in. Please support the Raffle with donations (for the Huntsman Cancer Institute). See Keith's appeal in his last letter.
