Greetings,
The Josh Sawyer Memorial Scholarship was created by Brother Keith Moody '90 to both honor the memory of our beloved brother Joshua James Sawyer, who we tragically lost in 2003, and give financial aid to a worthy undergraduate brother of the Gamma Omega Chapter at UConn who epitomizes the ideals of our Fraternity set forth in the Jordan Standard.
The scholarship awards one $1,000 scholarship per academic year. Deadline for application is April 1st.
Past recipients include:
2007 Jacob Herrewyn = $1,000
2008 TBD - not announced yet
Keith Moody set forth the following criteria for the award:
Criteria for receiving the Sigma Chi Josh Sawyer Memorial Scholarship1. "A Student of Fair Ability" ~ Minimum GPA = 2.7 2. Brother must be either living in the house or moving into the house (as Magister, Josh Sawyer was adamant that the NIBS must move into the chapter house and that the house must be full)
3. Be in Good Financial Standing with the Gamma Omega Chapter (no outstanding dues owed) "A deep sense of personal responsibility"
4. "With Ambitious Purposes" (either hold an office, elected to hold an office or aspire to hold an office in Sigma Chi in the future)
5. Write an essay to Josh Sawyer's family about what Josh Sawyer did for Sigma Chi at UConn and how the White Cross of Sigma Chi gained new luster from the life of brother Josh Sawyer. Josh was initiated into Sigma Chi on 5/5/01 and graduated from UConn May 2003. He was enrolled in Quinnipiac Law School to start August 2003. Essays can be based on interviews with Sigma Chi Alumni that were active during the period 2001-2003.
Giving to the Scholarship Fund is through the The Sigma Chi Foundation so donors may take advantage of its tax exempt 501-3-C status. Gifts should be directed to:
