My workshops are conducted in a friendly relaxed atmosphere. I teach with a combination of lecture, slides, and demonstrations and welcome beginning, intermediate and advanced artists. I am happy to give you individual instruction and I encourage you to ask questions, bring your electric pencil sharpener, your enthusiasm and your sense of humor.

Powder It with Pastel

Use soft pastels as a foundation for the colored pencil. Enjoy all the color nuances offered by the pencil, but let the pastel do a lot of the work first. Includes an exercise from Colored Pencil Explorations.

Enhance It with Watercolor

Learn how to use transparent watercolor as a base for the colored pencil. Develop rich color quickly and work faster with great results. Includes an exercise from Colored Pencil Explorations.

Sparkle It with Glass

An in-depth look at glass characteristics and effects: highlights, reflection and distortion. Discover how easy it is to create the look of sparkling glass.

Splash It with Water

Take a close look at water. Water itself has no color and is invisible. It is only by its effects (distortion, reflection and refraction) that we know it is there. Learn to create the "look" of water. Exercises include the Water (or Dew) Drop.

Polish It with Metal

Learn to create the shiny look of polished metal. Practice with different kinds of metal surfaces: silver, brass, metallic glaze. See and re-create distorted reflections as you learn how to include realistic-looking metal in your own work.

Compose It with Strength and Elegance

Composition. Scary? Not any more! This is Composition Made Easy 101. Janie teaches the basics in easy-to-understand terms and illustrates with examples and demonstrations. The practice exercises will complete your design education and you'll "graduate" from Janie's Composition College with honors. Learn to create striking compositions of your own and how to evaluate any piece of art.
