Paper tole looks very difficult and complex but it is really very easy. It just requires good detail scissors, careful cutting and time. This particular paper tole was done as a guest artist demo piece for the 100 Proof Press website during August and September 2001.
Stamp the rabbits four times on velveteen paper with Memories ink. Make sure one stamping is centered on a half sheet of the velveteen paper--this one is your base. Let it dry overnight to be sure it is completely set.
Color all copies with colored pencils, shading as shown. Colored pencil is not 'permanent' on velveteen paper, so work carefully and keep your hands clean by washing often from now on!
Cut out various layers: one full image of both rabbits, one of the arm and hat of the largest rabbit, one of the leg of the smaller rabbit; one of that bunny's jacket, and also its arm. Cut out the head of each rabbit including the ear that is forward.
To assemble, lay the pieces in their proper places and look to see which pieces need to 'come forward' or stay at the back. If you only need a little depth, use regular doublestick tape. If it needs to be higher, use foam tape. If you would prefer, you can use hot glue or silicone sealer, but I wouldn't recommend it for this type of paper which will show any excess glue.
Mount velveteen paper to rust cardstock which you have edged with gold leafing pen. Layer onto green cardstock. Notch corners, attach lame thread. Attach green cardstock to center of larger piece of rust cardstock which has been stamped with leaves in gold. Set aside.
Cut roses apart from two rose charms using wire cutters. Glue the two largest flowers to large rabbit's slippers, and the two smallest to the slippers of the smaller rabbit. Glue a whole rose charm to the smaller rabbit's waist. Glue a bow to the neck of the largest rabbit. Paint a heart charm with Lumiere Russet paint and let it dry. Glue under hand of largest rabbit. You might find it easier to use tweezers to place the charms exactly where you want them. Make sure you don't use too much glue because it will show on the velveteen!
Spray the entire piece with fixative and let dry.
And now a smaller paper tole, with step by step pictures. This is done with the reliquary stamp from Postmodern Design, just to show that you need to look at ALL of your stamps in a different way: you will find most of them will convert to paper tole!

Supply list:
One sheet of parchment cardstock in a light brown.
Postmodern Design's Reliquary Stamp ST2-103-D ($8.50+$4 shipping to Postmodern Design, P.O. Box 720416, Norman, OK 73070)
Brilliance Ink in Coffee Bean
Metallic gel pens in gold and/or bronze
A gold leafing pen
Tweezers, fine point scissors, foam tape, superstrength tape, and silicone glue.
Step 1: Stamp the images seven times on the cardstock. One of the stampings has to have a border area--this is your base image.

Step 2: Color all the images with gel pens. Only the one you decide is going to be the TOP one must be done very carefully. The rest, you just want color on, in case a bit can be seen.
Cut them all out. You will see that I decided to make the reliquary four images deep. The fifth one is the base, and the remaining two were cut up for the details: two each of the hinges/fasteners and base rim, and one each of the remaining bits. I didn't cut them out completely in this picture, because I wanted to be able to find them again! LOL
I glued a key charm (Just Jhone) on the base image. The three layers have the opening cut out, and the top layer has the opening slit like doors. On this one, you first cut the openings, then color the back of the cardstock with the inkpad so it matches.
Edge all of the pieces with the leafing pen. A hint to keep from making messes, especially on the smallest pieces is to always edge from the BACK. That way, if your marker slips, you color the part you don't see, instead of the part you need the detail on.

Step 3: Slightly 'roll' the arms (edges towards center widthwise) so that they are more armlike. Cut a length of foam tape to reach from the center of the top of the hand to just above the opening, and from the bottom of the opening to the base. It should be very narrow: about 1/4" wide. Attach this to all the hand pieces. On all the edges, put superstick tape.

Step 4: Assemble the arms carefully one at a time on top of each other. At this point, squeeze out a little bit of silicone glue on a scrap piece of paper and dot a bit on the back of each tiny detail piece with a toothpick. Use tweezers to layer them in place. If you would like, at this time you can add tiny holeless pearls or clear beads as shown in the detail below. Let it all dry and set for about an hour, and then layer on background papers.
