ADVANTAGES:

  1. Closer interaction with the child usually circumvents a lot (not all) of the teenage conflict with the parents. The "us" (children) against "them" isn't as strong because both "us" and "them" are working together. When people work together, they have greater opportunities to understand the point of view of others.
  2. Ability to focus on a specific subject for as long as the student wants to work on it. In other words, the student doesn't have to stop working on an interesting project after 50 minutes to go to another class. On the other hand, he/she doesn't have to continue with a boring subject. Either an alternate activity or another method to teach the subject can be tried.
  3. Ability to go on field trips at will.
  4. Ability to devise learning moments throughout the day and not just during a particular 8:00-3:00 period of time.
  5. Ability to tailor the work to the child's learning style. Although I liked to read a lot as a child, my sisters did not. It surprised me that they learned almost as much as I did from watching movies and TV. (It was hard to win at Trivia Pursuit.)

METHODS:

  1. School at Home: Everything I have heard indicates that the student and teacher burns out within a year.
  2. Classical: A program which is similar to the above but is focused on literature, ....
  3. Traditional:
  4. Unit Studies:
  5. Eclectic:
  6. Unschooling:
