Debian -- The Universal Operating System
Wow! I have really been enjoying my Linux the last couple of weeks. No virus or spyware worries, and I can still run Linux versions of my favorite software. My Linux distribution of choice is Debian because it is pretty universal, is free, installing applications is a cinch, and is easy to keep up to date.
Here is what I run on my Linux System:
KDE 3.2.3 - Desktop environment, similar to Windows.
Mozilla Firefox - Web browsing
Mozilla Thunderbird - Email
OpenOffice.org - Nice office suite, comparable to MS-Office
Gimp 2.0 - Graphics manipulation, comparable to Adobe Photoshop
LyX - LaTeX based Word Processor.
LogJam - LiveJournal Client
gFTP - FTP Client
XChat - IRC Client
Gaim - Multi-protocol Instant Messenger Client
XMMS - MP3 and OGG multimedia player, comparable to WinAmp
Kaffeine - Multimedia player, similar to Windows Media player
Quanta - HTML editor, comparable to HTML Beauty ++ 2004
KAudioCreator - CD Ripper, comparable to CDex
KPilot - For hotsyncing my Sony Clie
K3B - Cd burning software
I think that most people will find that the list above covers 90% to 100% of what they do daily.
