Owens Valley and Inyo Mt's Run 3/31/06 to 4/4/06

Run Report
Well, I had a really good time! Friday afternoon we did a run up
through the Alabama Hills, we only had time for a small area, I took
some video of this run, from my camera mounted on the passengers,
Ron's, side of the windshield, it is a good video. The next day we
meet up with Rainer and Mary Ann, and Ron and Jen. We headed up the
Swansea to Cerro Gordo Trail, also on video. It was pretty much normal
until we got into that 5th, ridge then it changed. The trail had two
small steams running down them, with snow on the sides, kind of fun!
We came to the end of the trail at that big meadow at 9200ft, where
you turn towards the Salt Tram Transfer Station. The snow was deep at
least 8", as you can see from the photos. Ron wanted to test the snow
and got stuck, because he did not know where the road went. It was
easy to get him out. Anyway we headed back down the Mts, which
actually was more fun than going up, sorry no video. The next day we
took off for Panamint Valley/Death Valley. We went up to the Charcoal
Kilns and then tried for Mahogany Flats, did not get there at 7250ft
we turned around, I took a couple of trail photo's going down hill,
photos from the seat. We then crossed the valley over to the Argos
Range. We checked out the Minetta Mine cabin, Ron and Jen drove up
the mine trail as far as they could go, to get to an upper level where
the tunnels where. Next we headed up the Lookout City trail, this is a
rocky hard trail until it starts to climb, switch backs and on the
edge! Black Obsidian and really thick glass can be picked up off the
ground. Nadeau Rd does connect with Hwy 190 and back to camp.
The next day Ron and Jen and Ron and I headed back
out. Rainer and Mary Ann headed back to Oceanside.
We went to the
Reward Mine and then checked out the next 5 or 6 mines south of there.
After that we headed back to camp and had some lunch, and headed out
for some mine shafts we saw on the Swansea Trail. These were really
good, some vertical shafts of at least 50 ft, throw the rock down the
shaft measurement method. The weather was pretty much as the national
weather service said, except the rain and wind all the way to
Oceanside. This was a really good run, and I could see the making of a
"Break open the Swansea to Cerro Gordo Trail" run every year.

We could have gotten through that snow field with chains front and
rear,or the old drive out as far as you can go, then get pulled back
and do it all over again, and more day light and a GPS trail to
follow. Then down towards Mexican Springs, I am sure, that would have
been somewhat frozen, at least in the shaded areas, more chains. Slip
and Slide!!
