IN MEMORY OF LANCE CPL. EDWARD WOLFENDALE

10 November 1999
Lt. General Raymond Ayers presents the Silver Star to Stella Wolfendale in honor of her son,
Lance Cpl. Edward Wolfendle.

On Feb. 22 a Squad of Marines from 1st Platoon  India Co. 3rd Bn. 7th Marines  were taken under fire by an element of the 141st North Vietnamese Army. They called in for help then attacked the tree line.
Among those to come to their aid was  one Marine L/Cpl Edward J. Wolfendale , we called him Wolfie.
He had 17 days left on his tour and was expecting orders home in the next couple of days. Unknown to us at the time was the fact we had attacked 250 –300 NVA regulars, well entrenched  and ready to fight, with less than 50 Marines. Three days later, after 200 rounds of 8 inch, 2000 rounds of 105 mm and nine flights of Fixed wing aircraft support, the battle was almost over. There remained one bunker that was giving us hell. We had a fireteam of Marines about 25 meters from the bunker, pinned down, wounded and out of ammo. L/Cpl Wolfendale picked up a LAAW and ignoring the heavy fire, ran to their aid. He reached his friends but when he came to his knees to get off a shot at the bunker he took a direct hit just below the waist, taking off both of his legs at the hip. He died on the spot. He didn’t have to go out to help his friends, he could have kept his head down and not one of us would have given it a second thought, Hell, He was going home in a few days !!  But Wolfie wasn’t made that way. We would like to make clear one undisputable fact. Wolfies life was not taken by the enemy, it was given by him to protect his friends.
Marines who are killed in this manner gain a certain Immortality because the rest of us never forget .
