El
Cajon Mt.
El Cajon Mountain is the large mountain overlooking
El Cajon valley and Lakeside from the northeast. It sits north
west of the El Capitan Reservoir and north east of El Monte County
Park. The mountain has been nicknamed "El Cap" by locals,
because of it's striking similarity in appearance to El Capitan
in Yosemite Valley. This
area is characterized by long approach hikes and back country
climbing.
There are several major
formations on the mountain :
El Cap Wall
This large back
country crag has a 40 year history of bush whacking approaches
and trad climbing. Recently, some bolted routes have been established
also.
The South Ridge
This is the long
descending ridge line. It runs north/south and is the part of
the mountain closest to El Monte Road. There is a class 2/3 "trail"
that goes up this ridge to the summit.
El Monte Slabs
These large slabs
sit on the west side of the South Ridge above El Monte County
Park, and can easily be seen from I-8 or Hwy 67. At least a half
dozen "adventure" routes have been put up in this area.
The Dihedrals
The Dihedrals are
the large prominent outcroppings of rocks on the west side, between
the South Ridge and El Monte Slabs.
The Quarry
Just right (east)
of the South Ridge sits an old quarry. It holds 4 or 5 difficult
bolted climbs but don't waste your time. The rock is very scaly
and the 3/8 bolts are badly rusted. These routes probably have
not been done in a long time. |
