Lawson Peak

Warning : (fall 2006) Some of the bolts at Lawson Peak may not be safe. There was a recent report of one bolt breaking off in a climbers hand as he tried to clip the hanger. Many of these bolts are old 5/16 buttonhead bolts.

Lawson Peak is a geat San Diego back country experience. Lots of boulders and slabs. Lots of brush, not many trees. Great view from the top. Even if you have 4 wheel drive, the 2 mile dirt road to the top may require hiking. Might be best to park where the pavement ends. This backcountry spot can be quite warm in the summer.

Access Issue : None known

How to get there : Take I-8 east, well past Alpine, to the Descanso Hwy 79 exit. After exiting I-8, drive south on Japatul Rd about 6 miles to Lyons Valley Rd. Follow Lyons Valley Rd 4.5 miles and park at the Mile 13 marker. From here, hike the dirt road 2 miles up hill to a saddle, then continue uphill to the rocks and the summit.

Types of Climbing : Runnout bolt leads (note the bad bolt warning above), Toprope, Bouldering

Number of Routes : Several, 10 to 15 ?
