Stonewall
Peak
Warning
Stonewall Peak was badly
burned in the Oct 2003 fire that swept thru San Diego County.
This resulted in a lot of surface "plating" of the
rock. Helmets and care are advised if you climb here because
these loose flakes can peel off and hit you.
Stonewall Peak offers a great back country semi mountainous setting
in Cuyamaca Rancho State Park. The 2 1/2 mile hike to the summit
of Stonewall Peak is worth the effort even if you don't climb.
You will find the climbs on the rocks that make up Stonewall's
Summit. A parking fee is charged in the park ($5). Camping is
available for a fee also if you have made a reservation at this
popular spot.
The climbing is not bad,
but may be a bit different than some are used to. Most routes
can be lead or toproped. Some bouldering can be found also. There
is generally no new development at this area, since the park
allows climbing but does not encourage its expansion.
