Twilight
Zone
(aka Rock Mountain)
If
you love tons of poison oak and serious bushwhacking, this is
the place for you. Twilight Zone is the only significant rock
wall in San Diego County that faces "north", but nobody
goes there. Can you guess why? It's 200 ft high, and offers several
oak filled crack climbs as well as possibliites for face climbing.
A handful of climbers have visited the place over the years,
but few if any make a second visit. If you are into back country
exploration, love self torture, and are totally immune to poison
oak, this may be the place for you.
Twilight Zone sits on the
north side of Rock Mountain in the Cleveland National Forest.
Access Issue: While Twilight Zone sits on National
Forest land, the approach requires travel across about 1/4 mile
of private open space land (not Indian Reservation). There are
some no tresspassing signs posted along the dirt road.
How to get there: From Lakeside, take Wildcat Canyon
Rd towards Barona Indian Reservation. Not long after you enter
Indian reservation land (but well before you get to the casino),
there is a dirt road on the right called Featherstone Canyon
Rd. There may not be a sign for it on Wildcat Canyon Rd, but
soon after you turn onto it you will see a sign for Featherstone
Church Camp. Go this way. Continue until you get to some houses
and a cattle guard. Drive through the cattle guard and continue
another mile or two until you see a boulder fence that parallels
the road on the right. You should see Twilight Zone up on the
mountain on your right. Continue until a definite left bend in
the road starts taking you farther away from the mountain. This
is probably the best place to park for your bushwhack. There
aren't any "No Tresspassing" signs here. If you continue
further on the dirt road, you will come to a gate leading to
Featherstone Camp that says "keep out no tresspassing".
