Airport Sites a Cause for Concern

The City of Santee is at the forefront of a campaign to ensure that Santee and our East County neighbors do not bear the brunt of impacts from a new airport. In recent testimony before the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority, Mayor Randy Voepel argued against closing the vitally important East Miramar military facility and turning it into an intrusive airport. Not only would national security be at stake, but the noise, pollution, traffic and environmental damage would be detrimental to the quality of life in Santee. Despite this testimony, the Airport Board voted to include MCAS East Miramar, along with other military bases, to be considered further as potential sites for a new regional airport. Seven sites will be studied over the next several years. The final proposed site is planned to be presented to voters in November 2006. Could we really end up with a regional airport next door to Santee?

Santee Expresses Concern
Over San Diego
Housing Project

The City of Santee is closely monitoring a development application which would see up to 500 housing units built just outside of Santee’s borders along Mast Boulevard, across from West Hills High School. While many consider the hills above Mast Boulevard as being a part of Santee, this territory is legally within the boundaries of the City of San Diego. The City of San Diego has been notified of Santee’s serious concerns over incompatibility, small lot sizes and neighborhood densities, particularly with 210 multiple-family units being proposed as part of the project. Also of significant concern is San Diego’s apparent lack of ability to provide sufficient fire, police or ambulance services to this area, thus placing that burden on Santee taxpayers.

The Santee City Council joined an effort in 2002 to seek State funding to place this property into Mission Trails Regional Park as permanent open space. Thus far, this funding has fallen short. Now Pardee Construction Company is proceeding with their plans for the property.

Residents with concerns can call (619) 258-4100, ext.167 and ask to speak to Melanie Kush, who is monitoring the project on behalf of Santee. All citizen concernswill be recorded and forwarded to the City of San Diego, who must address these as part of their review process.
